This is the heart-stopping moment a buffalo engaged in a desperate struggle to survive after being attacked by a group of lions - and lived to tell the tale.
Photographer Scott MacLeod captured the moment the lions - not to mention scores of tourists in safari vehicles - ganged up on the lonesome buffalo in Tanzania.
Scott spotted the pride of 11 lions while on safari as the animals used the shade cast by his vehicle as a welcome respite from the heat of the day.
However, the predators were soon on the move when they spotted something of interest in the distance - a herd of tempting buffalo.
Scott comments: "The lions roused themselves and moved on towards a herd of buffalo in the distance.
"Two of the strongest females padded stealthily towards their prey as a third lion circled around behind. The other lions waited, and watched.
"After a 20-minute standoff, the largest buffalo made a run for it and was soon caught".
What ensued was an example of nature at its most vicious as the lions fought tooth and claw to bring the buffalo down.
Scott adds: "The lions tried to grapple the buffalo to the ground, clawing at its flanks and twisting its hind legs.
"With a lion clinging to its tail, the buffalo could not move without increasing its pain.
"Ignoring its pain, the buffalo charged at three of the younger lions, who were forced to scamper away.
"By now, more than a dozen safari vehicles had gathered. Perhaps mistaking us for its herd, the buffalo ran into our midst, and the battle continued on the road.

A Canada goose with remarkable fighting spirit has survived being shot with a crossbow. Following the attack the bird was left with a 15 inch crossbow bolt impaled through its body. Amazingly, it survived having the bolt removed and is now receiving specialist care at the Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Nantwich. RSPCA Inspector Jackie Hickman commented: "This was a barbaric act of cruelty on a defenceless wild bird and I believe somebody must know who is responsible". She added: "I have dealt with a similar situation before where a farm animal was shot with a crossbow bolt and following DNA testing the perpetrator was identified and successfully prosecuted. "It is against the law to use any bow or crossbow against wild birds or other animals."

Soggy Moggy Survives Spin In Washing Machine
A tiny moggy was left somewhat soggy after going for a spin in a washing machine.
Frances Leate was horrified when she switched on the machine only to realise her kitten Scampi was trapped inside.
Thankfully, however, the youngster emerged from the ordeal wet but unharmed.
The inquisitive eight-week old ginger and white kitten climbed into the drum of the machine when Frances left the room to gather up some washing.
When Frances, from Colchester in Essex, returned she placed the clothes in the machine and switched it on for a 40-degree wash.
It was just starting to fill with water when the mum-of-one realised there was no sight of Scampi and experienced a terrible premonition.
She raced back into the kitchen and, spotting Scampi inside the machine, turned it off.
However, the water didn't drain away and she could only watch as Scampi frantically paddled to keep his head above water.
Panicking and unable to open the door, Frances raced round to a neighbour's for help.
The pair of them were then able to liberate a soaking wet and apparently lifeless Scampi.
Finding that her pet was still breathing, Frances rushed Scampi to the vets where after an overnight stay he made a full recovery.
However, the tiny tearaway had a very lucky escape as it was discovered he had a large amount of water on his lungs.
If he had been in the washing machine for any longer he might not have survived.

After loosing his temper, Stephen Stacey, 20, of Portsmouth, placed the animal inside the kitchen appliance.
He then cooked it for five seconds, causing the 'defencless' animal to be zapped with harmful radiation and to cook from the inside.
Amazingly, the black and white cat, who has now been named 'Nancy', survived the ordeal, despite still emitting heat seven hours after the incident.
Portsmouth Magistrates' Court heard how Stacey's neighbour Simon Allen was woken at 2.30am on February 25 this year when Stacey's girlfriend Jade, 17, knocked on his door in tears.
After hearing what had happened he went round and confronted Stacey, asking him where the cat was.
He then "opened the microwave and the cat walked out with his tongue hanging out".
Sarah Wheadon, prosecuting, said: "Simon Allen went to their flat and the defendant said the cat had scratched him. He showed him his hand which did indeed have scratches on it.
"Stacey told him he had intended to kill the cat by throwing it out of the window or putting it in the microwave.
"He said he had been in the microwave for about five seconds".
Mr Allen took the cat away from Stacey, who had been drinking all day, and back to his flat where he called the RSPCA.
Ms Wheadon added: "RSCPA inspector Jenny Ride examined the cat and found the top of her eyes were red and she was still hot to touch".
In order to save Nancy, Jenny put her in the bath and poured three jugs of cold water on her to cool her down.

Portsmouth Magistrates' Court heard how Stacey's neighbour Simon Allen was woken at 2.30am on February 25 this year when Stacey's girlfriend Jade, 17, knocked on his door in tears.
After hearing what had happened he went round and confronted Stacey, asking him where the cat was.
He then "opened the microwave and the cat walked out with his tongue hanging out".
Sarah Wheadon, prosecuting, said: "Simon Allen went to their flat and the defendant said the cat had scratched him. He showed him his hand which did indeed have scratches on it.
"Stacey told him he had intended to kill the cat by throwing it out of the window or putting it in the microwave.
"He said he had been in the microwave for about five seconds".
Mr Allen took the cat away from Stacey, who had been drinking all day, and back to his flat where he called the RSPCA.
Ms Wheadon added: "RSCPA inspector Jenny Ride examined the cat and found the top of her eyes were red and she was still hot to touch".
In order to save Nancy, Jenny put her in the bath and poured three jugs of cold water on her to cool her down.
She was then taken to a local vets where ice packs were placed in her cage to keep her cool.

A man tried to kill his pet cat by microwaving it after it scratched his hand, a court has heard.
After loosing his temper, Stephen Stacey, 20, of Portsmouth, placed the animal inside the kitchen appliance.
He then cooked it for five seconds, causing the 'defencless' animal to be zapped with harmful radiation and to cook from the inside.
Amazingly, the black and white cat, who has now been named 'Nancy', survived the ordeal, despite still emitting heat seven hours after the incident.

Six-Week-Old Baby Falls Into Fast Lane ... And Lives
Tiny tot Jonathan Samuel really is a miracle baby after being catapulted from a car at 70mph and surviving without so much as a scratch.
Six-week-old Jonathan was in his baby seat in the back of his dad Oliver's Vauxhall Astra when a tyre blew.
The car spun round six times before smashing into the central reservation, sending Jonathan - still strapped into his seat - flying out of the door.
He then bounced along the fast lane before being flung from his seat and coming to rest on the edge of the carriageway.
The drama happened as salesman Oliver, 31, was driving along the M6 near Wigan with wife Sadaf, daughter Shalona, 18 months, and Jonathan.
Sadaf was in the back with Jonathan while Shalona was in her baby seat in front.
They had been visiting family in Glasgow and were heading home to Croydon, Surrey.
Sadaf, 23, said: "I was asleep but woke to feel the car spinning around and the door flapping open and shut.
"I looked to my side and saw the car seat had gone and started shouting 'Where is my baby?'"
When the car came to a halt Oliver leapt out and frantically started scanning the carriageway for Jonathan.
He comments: "I was screaming because I expected to find parts of him and see blood. I was looking for his body".
Finally he spotted the crumpled car seat in the fast lane but when he reached it Jonathan wasn't there.
"It was like a nightmare getting worse, it was agony," recalls Oliver. "Our baby was gone."
Then he heard crying and spotted a tiny bundle in the outside lane.
He said: "I could see headlights coming so I ran and grabbed him and carried him back to Sadaf."
Sadaf said: "I just grabbed the baby, bracing myself for what I might see. But there wasn't a scratch. He was distressed but as soon as I cudd...
