There was double delight for destroyers Defender and Diamond as the warships received a warm welcome from families after a landmark deployment.

The two ships sailed into Portsmouth Naval Base 60 minutes apart ¨ñ and a few hours ahead of the nationís flagship, aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, which they accompanied for most of the past seven months.

The duo left the city in May, part of a nine-ship force ñ seven of them British ñ with the flagship at the centre on its maiden deployment to the Pacific Rim and back.

Both Type 45 warships formed part of the defensive ring of ships formed around the carrier, fulfilling their principal role, watching out for aerial threats.

But there were also opportunities at times to break away from the core task group and operate independently or with allies, such as Defenderís extremely high-profile patrol of the Black Sea in June.

US Navy unveils sea-based laser weapon that will be deployed to Persian Gulf - Apr 2013
The U.S. Navy has unveiled a ship-mounted infrared laser weapon that can bring down drones and disable other ships.

The Navy said it intends to deploy the weapon to the Persian Gulf area in 2014 in what some are saying is a response to Iran's development of drones.

Officials say the Laser Weapons System (LaWS) provides ships a method to easily defeat small boat threats and aerial targets without using bullets, and the associated expense of ammunition.

LaWS shoots high-powered infrared laser at the target and "operates much like a blowtorch ... with an unlimited magazine," a Navy official told FOXNews.com.

A video demonstration released Monday (8 April) http://bit.ly/10Pvoyk shows LaWS striking and bring down a remote-controlled target aircraft.

    U.S. Navy 'swim calls' - 2016

When you're job is sailing the seas, the World is your swimming pool.

These amazing pictures show sailors and marines from the U.S. Navy taking part in what they call 'swim calls'.

Most recently pictured earlier this month (Feb) are those cooling off by jumping from into the Indian Ocean from guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam.

With the ship anchored, Swim Calls are seen as a refreshing break from the job of keeping high-tech battleships running.

The activity often occurs in warm foreign waters, such as the Mediterranean, Arabian and South China seas, the Indian and Pacific oceans.

Suffice to say, there will be people tasked with shark watch, from the ship and rigid-hulled inflatable boats.

Swimmers are able to clamber back onto the ship via landing docks or by climbing cargo nets.
