'Yes, there was a riot, but it was great': Cabaret Voltaire on violent gigs, nuclear noise - and returning to mark 50 years.

They made music like sonic warfare, using steamhammers for drums and annoying anyone they could. As the band return, they relive the mayhem years - and their soundtrack spinoffs, from Attenborough to Chernobyl.

STEPHEN MALLINDER and CHRIS WATSON pictured back stage at the Drama Studio in Sheffield. Two of the three founder members of Cabaret Voltaire are to reform the band to mark the band's 50th anniversary. The other band founder, Richard H. Kirk, died in 2021.

Axe to grind: toolmaking father and daughter Robin and JoJo Wood revive lost Sheffield tradition.
Tired of cheap, poor-quality tools, Robin and JoJo Wood decided to resurrect the craft - with orders now coming from around the world.
Axes are being forged in Sheffield again for the first time in decades, after a father-and-daughter team revived the city's lost tradition.
Robin Wood, 59, and his daughter, JoJo, 30, teach courses in spoon carving, a craft that requires the use of an axe. The Woods became frustrated that there was no UK-produced axe they could recommend to students.
So they decided to create their own, which after almost six years and many design tweaks is now being produced in Sheffield.

Fafher and daughter Robin and JoJo Wood, who have teamed up as Wood Tools to design and create the first Sheffield axes to be made in the steel city for 30 years. The duo were photographed hand grinding at the Beehive Works, previously the workshop of Sheffield's last jobbing grander, Brian Alcock, who worked there from the 1970s right up until when he died last year.
