Supersize Spaniel Slims Down To Win Pet Fat Fighters Competition
*STRICTLY EMBARGOED UNTIL 00.01 Thursday 4th October 2012*

A dog whose former nickname was 'Jumbo Jack' has been crowned the UK's pet slimming champ for 2012 after shedding nearly one third of his bodyweight.

The seven-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and 16 other pets have undergone a physical transformation as part of a six month diet and fitness regime run by veterinary charity PDSA.

At the beginning of the competition the Spaniel tipped the scales at 20.5kg - double his ideal weight - and six months on has lost a remarkable 6.4kg, which is 31% of his bodyweight and bringing him to a far healthier 14.1kg- trimming 20cm off his waist.

Owner Rose Welsh, 52, adopted the already super-sized Spaniel back in January of this year, she said: "When Jack first came to us he was morbidly obese and could barely walk.

"I couldn't bear to see him in such a sad state so I took him to the vet to talk about a diet and fitness plan.

"Today he is a different dog and we call him Jumping Jack instead of Jumbo Jack, as he jumps every time he barks now. He is fit, healthy and happy - everything a pet should be - and we are absolutely thrilled."

Jack had been overfed and hardly exercised prior to being adopted by Rose, which had caused him to become deaf, as the extra fat blocked his ear canals. He struggled to walk more than a few steps, couldn't play and couldn't even bark.

PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, added: "Having adopted a seriously overweight animal, Rose has done a wonderful job in managing Jack's food intake and safely increasing his exercise. As for Jack, he undoubtedly feels much fitter and happier, and has a greater life expectancy t...

    Supersized Pets Fight The Flab
A pet fit competition run by a veterinary charity will see 18 of the UK's fattest animals get in shape.

Pet Fit Club run by the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) encourages overweight cats, dogs and rabbits to lose weight.

Specialist vets will be guiding the owners of each of these supersized pets on their journey to good health by providing a balanced diet and tailored exercise plan.

The contestants - 11 dogs, five cats and two rabbits - are carrying a combined excess weight of more than 24 stone - the equivalent of 380 tins of dog food, 35 average-sized cats or 50 Yorkshire Terriers.

All of the finalists fall into the category of obese or morbidly obese and desperately need to lose weight to improve their quality of life.

Sean Wensley, PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, said: "Excess pounds can contribute to a number of serious health conditions and, sadly, it does reduce life expectancy. But the good news is that it's never too late to make positive changes to a pet's diet and lifestyle."

This year's 18 finalists include a line-up of pets who have become accustomed to a variety of unhealthy foods including a 'custard cream loving' dog called Alfie; a 10.2kg Scottish cat called Maverick who is 85% overweight; food thief, Deco - a canine who likes cake but is carrying 57% extra body weight; Romeo the Labrador who has a penchant for roast dinners who is 47% overweight.

Small enough to be used legally on the pavement or inside a shop, the GBP 5,500 QTvan is so named because it caters to three peculiarly British obsessions: caravans; queuing and tea. The tiny caravan is ideally suited to queuing overnight for the sales or tickets for Wimbledon fortnight, and boasts tea-making facilities to make any long wait bearable.According to the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), the QTvan is ideal for the estimated 220,000 people who use a mobility scooter without breakdown cover, and who face the prospect of a very long wait should they suffer a mechanical fault or their battery runs flat. Spokesman for the ETA, Yannick Read, said: (FOTO:DUKAS/REX)

Silk production - from worm to catwalk, southern India - 2010
SILK PRODUCTION - FROM WORM TO CATWALK

For many silk - the Queen of all fabrics - spells luxury, elegance, class and comfort.

But for hundreds of thousands of people in India it is something much more mundane but infinitely important - a vital life line.

An estimated 700,000 people are involved in various sericulture (silk production) activities in India.

Half of all the silk produced in India comes from the region of Karnataka where a sub-tropical climate allows for year-round production.

In 2007-08 India exported more than GBP 400 million of raw silk, carpets and ready made garments.

In 2007 alone it produced 18,320 metric tonnes of raw silk, making it the second a largest silk producer in the world.

It is second only behind China, which produced 108,420 metric tonnes of raw silk in the same period.

While the difference is vast, India's contribution is even more impressive considering that much of its production is done using outdated tools or by hand.

Ultimately, however, poor technology and high production costs undermine the vital role played by sericulture in improving India's rural economy.

    The Worm

The Silkworm Seed Production Centre in Mysore is run by Professor N.M. Biram Saheb.

He explains that the Indian government pioneered the provision of disease free lays of eggs as a way of improving yields without increasing start-up costs

The practice means that farmers are provided with a steady stream of healthy silkworm eggs.

It is deep in the seed production centre where the 'work' of creating these eggs takes place - in darkened rooms where moths are laid out on newspaper in racks of plastic trays.

Powerhouses of the silk industry they may be, but in reality they are pale weaklings whose only purpose is to mat...

Obese two-year-old weighs as much as adult woman, Taocun town, Shanxi province, China - 06 Apr 2010
THE TWO-YEAR-OLD WHO WEIGHS THE SAME AS AN ADULT

She may only be two years old but young Pang Ya already tips the scales at 6.5st - the same as an average fully grown Chinese woman.

Ya, of Taocun town, Shanxi province, was born at a normal weight of 4kg, but has piled on the pounds ever since.

Her worried parents, father Fan Ruixiao and mother Zhang Chunmi, are now desperately looking for a way to help their daughter slim down.

They first became concerned when Ya was just 8 months old and already weighed 20kg (3.1st).

Scared that something was wrong with their daughter they took her to hospital for a check up.

However, doctors were unable to explain why Ya is the size she is. And a subsequent visit to another hospital in August last year proved to be just as fruitless.

"Doctors can't figure out the reasons for her obesity, which worries us a lot," said Ya's mother Chunmi, who now spends all her time at home taking care of her daughter.

"Doctors have never seen a girl as big as her. We searched the internet and can't find anyone who is heavier than her at her age, so she could be the heaviest kid in China".

Now at the age of two Ya weighs 41.5kg (6.5st) and has to wear clothes meant for 7-8 year olds.

At just under 1m tall, she is almost four times heavier than other children her age and stands out drastically when surrounded by her friends.

According to mother Chunmi bullying so far hasn't been a problem. "No one dares to bully her. She is really fierce".

But Ya's weight is already having serious affects in other areas. "Her weight doesn't stop her from playing but she gets tired if she walks long, and she seldom runs. She also has difficulty in squatting down".

    Her parents...

She may only be two years old but Pang Ya already tips the scales at 41.5kg (6.5st).

This means that the Chinese tot already weighs the same as an average fully grown, adult Chinese woman.

Her worried family is now seeking assitance to help their obese daughter lose weight.

Ya, of Taocun town, Shanxi province, was born at a normal weight of 4kg, but has piled on the pounds ever since.

When she was 8 months old she already weighed 20kg (3.1st), now at the age of two she tips the scales at 41.5kg.

"Doctors can't figure out the reasons for her obesity, which worries us a lot," said Ya's parents.

However, they then went on to admit that their daughter eats quite a lot compared to her peers.

Canstruction - sculptures made out of cans - Sep 2009
    ARTISTS DEMONSTRATE THEIR CAN-STRUCTION TECHNIQUES

These amazing sculptures have all been put together using nothing more than the humble tin can.

Architects spent months designing the spectacular creations ranging from the Titanic, and a dinosaur, to a panda and President Barack Obama.

And while their subject matters are diverse and different the one thing the sculptures have in common is the fact that they have been made out of thousands of tin cans.

They were built as part of a design contest run by food charity Canstruction.

As part of the challenge teams spend up to three months designing their structures on a computer.

With these designs showing exactly where each can must be placed, the sculptures themselves are constructed in just 12 hours.

The rule is that each structure must be self-supporting, with quarter of-an-inch sheets of cardboard used as levellers.

Teams are allowed to use tape, rubber bands and magnets but judges show preference for designs that do not.

Different cans are selected depending on their size, shape and label colour to fit each piece.

For example the 121cm wide and 198cm long Titanic sculpture, or TiCANic as it is called, is made from 8,000 cans of tuna and oysters.

The panda is made from 5,575 cans and the dinosaur from 3,780. The globe weighs 846kg and is made from 7,050 cans.

Once constructed, the sculptures go on show in the country where the competition was being held.

Those wishing to view them must donate one tin can of food, which are later distributed to food banks for homeless people.

Canstruction president Cheri Melillo said: "Teams can spend months planning their structure but are given just 12 hours to defy expectations, logic and gravity".
