HRH Sophie The Countess of Wessex was guest of honour today in St Peter Port where the Channel Island town and it's people celebrated the Liberation from German occupation 70 years ago today.
The island suffered badly during almost five years under the rule of German forces. The population lived on meagre rations as the Germans took most of the available food for their troops.
Hundreds of guests attended a service of thanksgiving in a local stadium officiated by The Very Revd John Hall , Dean of Westminster Abbey. HRH read a message from Her Majesty The Queen thanking the people of Guernsey for their loyalty during the war years.
The 3rd Battalion The Princess of Wales's Regiment took part in the parade, they are the only British Reserve regiment that recruits from the Channel Islands.
