Teacher Mirwais reads to female pupils at Qali Aday school, Afghanistan. Girls a the school were defying the Taliban to attend lessons. A letter had been pushed under the door of another local school warning that if girls continued to attend, it would be burnt down.
The school had 570 pupils, aged from six to 17,studying subjects including geography, history, science and English.
The school was short of eight teachers and there was not one woman on its staff, a legacy of the years in which women were denied access to any education. Government funding had dried up and the school relied on charity from Britain's Save The Children. April 2007.© Gethin Chamberlain / eyevine

Afghan tribal leaders meet to discuss Nato aid plan, Kandahar, Afghanistan
Village leaders from the Pashmul plain in Afghanistan's Kandahar province, the Taliban's heartland, at a shura to discuss NATO plans to deliver aid at a meeting with a provincial reconstruction team (PRT). The following day the PRT, accompanied by soldiers from Canada's Royal 22e Régiment (also known as the Van Doos) and soldiers from the Afghan national army , set out on foot to assess the need for aid. Overnight, troops at the forward operating base from which the mission set out reported killing a Taliban fighter laying a landmine in a nearby wadi. The team decided to take a different, but parallel, route. About 20 minutes into the mission a landmine exploded, blowing off Private Frederic Couture's left foot. Couture, a fitness enthusiast, was so distressed he attempted to shoot himself at the scene, and had to be disarmed by his lieutenant. He shot and killed himself a year later at his home in Roxton Pond, Quebec, apparently unable to live with his injuries. © Gethin Chamberlain / eyevine

David Beckham rallied British troops to support England's 2018 World Cup Bid at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan today (Sunday)

He joined 903 EAW (Expeditionary Air Wing), the team that manages Bastion airfield. RAF firefighters from 903 greeted him wearing Back the Bid 2018 scarves and waving a St.George's flag.

Only last week RAF firefighters were heavily involved in supporting their US counterparts fighting a massive fire at the neighbouring US base at Camp Leatherneck.

Sergeant Simon Marsh said: "We had 35 RAF firefighters and four RAF vehicles involved helping to fight the fire. It's a classic example of the British and the US working together."

He later distributed Back the Bid badges to the troops he met while touring the enormous camp in soaring temperatures.

Warrant Officer Steve Bowden said: "David's visit has helped us all get in the right frames of mind for the World Cup - he has really made us feel part of the excitement back home

"It's very easy and understandable that people here get detached from all the day to day events at home and we have thousands of England fans here."

"We'd all love England to be successful in their Bid for the World Cup in 2018 - to see the world's best tournament in our own country."

Beckham is the Vice President and Ambassador of the World Cup Bid 2018 and handed in England's official Bid Book to FIFA in Zurich last week.

On Saturday, the Royal Marines of 40 Commando presented the former England captain with a 'good luck' trophy for the World Cup in South Africa.

The Commando Dagger was mounted on a wooden plaque with a caption which read: 'Best wishes to the England Football Squad for the World Cup F...
