The picture shows Sa Foradada Storm by Marc Marco Ripoll, 39, from Mallorca, Spain. The picture was taken at the Viewpoint Sa Foradada between the towns Valldemossa and Dei in Mallorca. He said: ÒI tried many times to catch a good lightning strike behind this rock called Sa Foradada, but every time I tried, the conditions were not so good. I didn't have the moon on the sky to illuminate the scene, or the lightning was too far away. This night I knew that a big storm was approaching Mallorca and all the conditions were perfect. I don't remember if the moon was full, but I remember that it was very big. This was perfect, because the moon was going to illuminate all the land and the sea and gives more colour to the scene. I chose my composition, and I shot many pictures until the storm fell on me. This is one of the pictures I took that night in Sa Foradada. To see the storm and the lightning that night was something amazing.ÓThe 26 finalists for this yearÕs Weather Photographer of the Year have been announced and the public are being invited to vote for their favourite. The Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS), which celebrates its 170th birthday this year, in association with AccuWeather, has put the shortlisted pictures on their website and people can visit photocrowd.com/wpotyvote to vote until September 25.The popular competition, which is now in its fifth year, has attracted entries from around the world. A huge Serb Orthodox church in Pristina, Kosovo, unfinished and derelict. During the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s Serbia aggressively tried to reclaim Kosovo, enticing ethnic Serbs to return to the land of their ancestors, building Serb Orthodox churches. This was a newly built large orthodox church in the very centre of Pristina. Once Serbia lost the fight for Kosovo, and Serbs mostly left, Kosovars left the unfinished church to rot. Destroying it would send an unwanted message to the world and finishing it would be pointless since there are practically no Serbs left in Kosovo outside several isolated enclaves, says Oleg

Meet Carlow the firefighting cat. Well, not quite firefighting, you are more likely to find this rescued male moggie asleep on a pile of crew jackets, or asleep on a fire truck, or under one for that matter.
Four-year-old Carlow lives in a firehouse in Yorkville, Manhattan after being found and adopted by firefighters of Engine 22, Ladder 13.
He was an underfed stray kitten found hiding in a tyre at a mechanic?s shop when they found him.
"The idea was that Carlow could help keep mice out of the firehouse. Ever since he's been here, we don't see many mice at all," comments a fire station spokesperson, who says they are 'Carlow's PR'.
Mostly, found dozing, there is some excitement : a disgruntled Carlow is pictured being given a wash along with the comment: "Throwback nightmare to the time they tried to wash me".

Elephants try moulds for prosthetic legs, Lampang, Thailand - 23 Sep 2015

Gently does it! Caring staff at a charity patronised by supermodel Miranda Kerr are pictured carefully fitting a prosthetic mould to injured elephants.
Kerr donated a jumbo-sized US$100,000 last year to elephants who have suffered horrendous injuries by stepping on land mines.
Her generosity has enabled Friends of the Asian Elephant (FAE), based in Lampang, Thailand, to fund custom made replacement limbs for the stricken mammals.
The moulds are seen being applied to elephants Motala and Mosha. They are then shipped back to Chantilly, Virginia-based Animal Orthocare who fashion the limbs to snugly fit the patients.

Miranda Kerr Donates $100,000 to Elephant Charity
Caring supermodel Miranda Kerr has donated a jumbo-sized US$100,000 to baby elephants.
The 30-year-old Australian personally handed over the cheque last month to Soraida Salwala, Founder and Secretary General of the Friends of the Asian Elephant (FAE). The donation was made at a hotel Ms Kerr was staying at in Bangkok.
The funds will go to ensuring juveniles at the special hospital in Lampang, Thailand, will remain nourished.
Ms Salwala explains: "We have elephants like baby Naka, who is now one years old. His mother tried to kill him at birth, but we fed him for one year with goat milk to help him grow.
"Miss Miranda Kerr's generous donation of US$100,000 will be for our milk fund. In her honour we have named the fund "Miranda Kerr's Baby Elephants Milk Fund". She is a beautiful and good woman to help elephants.
"When I thanked her, Miss Kerr said she appreciated what my foundation was doing and she was happy to know about FAE and happy to help our good cause."
Since FAE built the world's first elephant hospital in MaeYao National Reserve in 1993 they have treated over 3,900 cases of sick and injured elephants.
Elephants brought to the hospital have often been poorly treated by owners or have suffered horrendous injuries through incidents such as stepping on land mines.

Two cars stuck in River Cam after owners ignored warnings and tried to cross flooded ford, Hinxton, Essex, Britain - 10 Dec 2012
Two cars have ended up on top of each other in a river after the drivers ignored warnings and drove through a flooded road. The silver Vauxhall and Volvo are now floating in the bloated River Cam in Hinxton, Essex, after the two accidents on the flooded ford. The driver of the Vauxhall managed to scramble free after ignoring the road closure sign at the weekend. The car was swept under the pedestrian bridge and only came to a stop when it hit the Volvo, which crashed into the water two weeks ago. A spokesman for Essex Police said: "We had a call from a driver saying their car had been taken into the river. "A police officer went down there and there were 'road closed' signs coming from both directions, but the driver chose to ignore them."

Mop-wielding shopkeeper fends off three armed robbers, Rushden, Northants, Britain - 24 Jan 2012
*full story: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/ewgr* A brave shopkeeper fought off three armed robbers using only a mop. Dinesh Gorania, 50 and his son Kishan, 21, were shutting up their shop when a masked man with a crow bar tried to enter and demanded money. But Mr Gorania, who had been cleaning the floor, hit the man with his mop, forcing him backwards. The man, who was swearing and threatening the pair, tried two more times to get into The Premier Store in Rushden, Northants, but Mr Gorania repeatedly hit him with the mop. Kishan then grabbed a hockey stick to help keep the man away. Two other masked men with crowbars then got out of a car and threw a metal bar at Mr Gorania, which he managed to block with his arm. The defeated men then got back in the car empty-handed, but smashed the shop window and the windows of Mr Gorania's van and Kishan's car as they left.

Night Heron Snatches Duckling For Dinner
These shocking images show nature at its worst.
A night heron is pictured taking off with a duckling that has swum too far away from its mother.
As the heron flies off with his dinner, eye contact is made between the mother duck and her duckling who is struggling to get away.
Wildlife photographer Michael Yang was taking his wife out to spot some cute wildlife at Radio Road in California to cheer her up after being ill for a few days.
He said: "We were hoping to find some baby avocets, stilts, or ducklings and were both really happy to see several families of ducklings following their mothers around the pond.
"As we were watching the ducklings a night heron flew in, which are not uncommon in the area but what we did not expect to see was the night heron land near a duckling that had wandered a little too far from its mother and snatch it from the water."
The duckling tried to dive under water to escape the night heron; unfortunately it didn't get deep enough and the heron pulled it out of the water, grabbing the duckling by a foot.
It took off with its dinner all the while the duckling was being flung about like a rag doll in the heron's beak.
Michael said: "At some point in all this my wife had turned away and started sobbing. It didn't help that, through all this, I was taking pictures of the "event" and not comforting her instead."
The popular birding location in Northern California is home to a variety of birds including...

Horse Who Tried To Board A Train Welcomes New Arrival
A horse who shot to fame after being spotted trying to board a train has welcomed a new arrival.
Ruby shot to worldwide fame earlier this year after CCTV footage emerged of her owner Joe Purcell trying to board a train with the white pony in tow.
The pair were also spotted in a local pub in Wrexham as well as visiting the A&E department of the local hospital.
Following the incident Ruby, who was expecting at the time, was taken into care by the RSPCA due to fears over her welfare.
Now her new owner Michelle Crowther is celebrating after the mare gave birth to a healthy white, brown and black colt.
According to Michelle, Ruby is proving to be a very good mother to the as yet unnamed two-week-old and is very protective.
She said: "He's very shy at the moment because Ruby is very, very protective and she's telling him to be cautious all the while and pushing him behind her so he's safe".
Speaking about the new arrival Michelle added: "He's really pretty with a lot of white on him and has an interesting quirk in that one set of eyelashes are black and the other set are white".
