They look like creatures from another planet, but these weird specimens are all marine life captured by talented underwater photographer Kei Nomiyama.
In his photo series Blackwater, the 36-year-old presents the amazing creatures discovered in the sea at night.
His work includes the quirky sight of a 'jellyfish rider', a lobster larvae hitching a ride on a hapless jellyfish, and the Phronima Sedentaria, a species of amphipod crustacean, that Kei says reminds him of the sci-fi film 'Aliens'.
Kei explains: "I live in Matsuyama city at Shikoku island, smallest of the four main islands in Japan. I mainly take these photos at Omi-island in Yamaguchi-prefecture. The Omi-island is located in the south of the main island of Japan and facing the Sea of Japan.

"Are you OK buddy?" a seagull seems to be saying as it inpects a poorly California sea lion resting on the beach.
Thankfully, the concerned bird wasn't the only one on hand to aid the stricken mammal.
A team from The Marine Mammal Center rehabilitation facility attended the scene at Moss Landing, California and carried out a rescue.
Wildlife photographer Michael Yang captured the incident as the seven-person team cautiously approached the sea lion, before carrying it away to be treated.
Laura Sherr, of the Marine Mammal Center, said: "This animal has been named is Karen Light, as we name all our patients, and was rescued due to lethargy, shaking, underweight, and allowing people to approach."

Great Balls Of Fire! Stunning Images Created With Smoke and Fire
A photographer has taken an explosive set of images by igniting gasoline in midair.
Rob Prideaux, 45, photographs fire and smoke and then creates patterns from it.
The San Francisco-based artist captures the fire in the split second its visible by using highly arcane methods.
Rob's Smoke and Fire series is his quest 'to shape one of the more uncontrollable phenomena in nature'.
He said: "Fire is pretty uncontrollable. The mid-air explosions have defied all attempts at wrangling so far. The shot with the loop of fire was created with steel plates between the camera to try to shape it."
Highlights of the fire images include a heart-shaped fireball, three blazing tennis balls hurtling through the air and a washing line, which has gone up in flames.
Prideaux also creates patterns from smoke by burning incense in the dark and photographing it.
Rob explains: "The smoke images are a more contemplative process of waiting and stillness and are heavily manipulated into patterns.
"I began duplicating and combining the smoke images as a meditative practice, dedicating 15 minutes each morning to thoughtless creation, and mandalas began to form, over time.
"From its source as raw material, I've gradually realised the images say a lot about ephemerality and the so-called taming of our natural environment."

Mother Squirrel Exhausted After Moving Babies Between Nest Boxes
Moving home is always exhausting, just ask this squirrel mother-of-two!
Photographer Christine Haines took these hilarious pictures of the mother carrying her youngsters from a nest box where they had been raised to a new one.
It shows the supermom carefully plucking her reluctant offspring from their cosy nest placed up a tree in Christine's backyard in Spokane, Washington.
She then places them on the top of the nest box before rolling them into balls to make transportation to the ground easier.
The final image, which may many mums will be able to sympathise with, is of the mother squirrel slumped in exhaustion on top of the new nest box, eyes closed and having a doze.
Christine explains: "A mother squirrel used one of my nest boxes to raise her young. I noticed she was in the process of moving her young into one of the other nest boxes in my yard.
"These pictures show her moving her two babies from one nest box to another. The young are hard to move because they are almost fully grown.
"It was fascinating watching her trying to roll the babies up into a ball so she can move them. The babies were almost too big to carry.
"She was exhausted by the end of the day and my favourite picture shows her falling asleep on the top of the nest box at the end of the day."

Yellow-crowned night heron tries to position frog so it can swallow it
Flipping Frog On The Menu For Hungry Heron
Kermit would do well to avoid this particular swamp.
One frog found it wasn't easy being green when a heron not only selected it for lunch, but subjected it to some controlled flipping - prior to swallowing it whole.
But not before giving the heron a raspberry by sticking its tongue out.
Photographer Nate Chappell captured the scene at Kitty Hollow County Park in Missouri City, Texas.
He explains: "Each evening for a spell a group of yellow-crowned night herons would fly in to feed on frogs and bugs in the swampy grass there.
"These images show a night heron which has caught a good sized frog.
"The heron had to flip the frog in the air several times in order to get it in right position to go down the hatch.
"Finally it was able to swallow the frog and you can clearly see the tongue of the frog sticking out as it awaits its fate.
"The night heron was preoccupied with eating his catch so it allowed me a close approach for some nice photographs."

Max the Rottweiler with his owner Annette Robertshaw. Annette's brother Colin had been visiting her and was eating some strawberries when Max took a shine to them. Colin offered Max one on a teaspoon but was caught totally by surprise after the dog wolfed both items down in one gulp.
Greedy Rottweiler Gets Silver Spoon Treatment
It's not just the crowds at Wimbledon who have a taste for strawberries and cream, a greedy Rottweiler got more than he bargained for when he was served up the summer fruit complete with the spoon it was on.
Max's owner Annette Robertshaw, 47, of Wakefield, Yorkshire, said her brother Colin had been visiting and was eating some strawberries when Max took a shine to them.
Colin offered Max, 10, one on a teaspoon but was caught totally by surprise after the dog wolfed both items down in one gulp.
Despite not suffering any immediate ill effects Annette rushed Max to her local PDSA pet hospital where he was quickly x-rayed.
The x-ray showed that the five inch spoon was lodged firmly in Max's stomach and he was rushed into surgery to remove the dangerous snack.
PDSA Veterinary Surgeon, Daniel Cook, said: "Although we do see lots of odd things that dogs have eaten, such as socks and children's toys, I have never seen a dog that's eaten a teaspoon before."
Annette says Max has fully recovered from his ordeal but now turns his nose up at strawberries.
She said: "We don't feed him anything on a spoon any more just in case but he doesn't seem to be too interested in strawberries lately."

A* student goes from geek to freak after becoming a freak show performer, Dartford, Britain - May 2012

Geek to Freak: A* Student Quits Uni To Join Freak Circus
An academically gifted, young woman, who excelled throughout school, quit her university course so she could fulfil her dream of becoming a freak show performer.
Danielle Martin, 24, would compete with her two school friends to see who could get the best grades, describing herself as a 'goody two-shoes'.
Now for a living Danielle hammers a nail into her nose, jumps on bits of broken glass and climbs up a samurai sword ladder, all for entertainment.
"I was the quiet one that worked hard to be top of the class," said Danielle.
"As an only child I wanted to please my family with my grades and make them proud of me. They expected me to stick to academia and have a sensible career but my true passion is being on stage and shocking people."
The petite, blonde from Dartford in Kent went to an all girl's school called Blackfen, where she gained a mixture of A*'s, A's and the odd B grade in her GCSE's.
Outside of education Danielle would spend all her spare time and pocket money on acting and dance classes.
She said: "My family would always make it clear to me that dancing and acting were very much a hobby."
When Danielle was 13, her mum Ruth Goldsmith, 54, took her to see the Circus of Horrors, a horror-themed rock-and-roll circus freak show, which got to the semi-finals in last year's Britain's Got Talent.
Danielle said: "She knew I would love it and she was right. I went back every year to see them perform.
"One year I was luckily enough to go backstage and get my programme signed by the ringmaster, Dok Haze.
"I said to him 'when I grow up I am going to come and work for you'."
With Danielle's impressive GCSE results she continued onto college to study biology and art and design, with her mum's dream of her becoming a docto...

Flights of Fancy: Paul Goldstein's 'In The Air' Wildlife Photography
For photographers, capturing animals in the wild is an art that can take years to master.
But wildlife photographer Paul Goldstein has taken his work to new heights by shooting animals frozen in the air as they leap.
His work sees stunning images showing jumping animals ranging from wildebeest to polar bears.
They include a dramatic flying fight between a baboon and a leopard and the cute, bouncy interaction between a pair of serval kittens.
Paul explains: "Mammals and indeed penguins cannot fly, it would be a physiological miracle if it occurred, but it is wonderful to see them try. It also is rare, which is why I like photographing it as it is a huge challenge. If the shot is successful it always elicits a good response.
"For the money shot there must be no part of the animal attached to a tree/branch/ice or rock. It does not matter if it is an 'air's breath' away, but just nothing touching.
"Air looms high on my agenda, I am obsessed by it, it is exciting photography and frequently original."
Describing the moment the baboon ambushed the leopard, Paul says: "Prime Mates? I don't think so, these are mortal enemies and a whole troop of baboons had 'treed' this young male leopard in the Masai Mara.
"Eventually they left, except one male that waited for the predators descent and jumped out at him. It gave the leopard a good dry slap then the leopard legged it and vaporised in seconds as is their wont.
"Whilst leopards will sometimes kill single baboons, they will avoid whole troops assiduously as they can turn on them. One of my favourite ever photos."
Regarding the polar bear cubs in Spitsbergen, Paul says: "What a morning. Seven polar bears in four hours many nautical miles from land in Spitsbergen. These two cub...

The World of Charles Dickens book by Stephen Browning - Jan 2012

Author Stephen Browning says
Book Explores The World of Charles Dickens
With the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens' birth commemorated on 7th February, a new book delves deep into the characters and locations featured in his classic works.
The World of Charles Dickens by Stephen Browning sees the author embark on a fascinating literary adventure throughout Britain.
His journey is illuminated by over 200 photographs taken especially for the book of locations in London, Kent, Yorkshire, the Midlands, the South of England, the West Country and East Anglia.
They include well-known locations including what is thought to be the Old Curiosity Shop in London, Dickens beloved sea-facing Bleak House in Broadstairs and the writer's London home in Holborn.
There are also trips to Rochester, the setting for Great Expectations and The Pickwick Papers, and The Lizard in Cornwall where Dickens would enjoy inspiring walks.
The pictures were shot over the course of a year and represent a reflection of Stephen Browning's lifelong admiration for Dickens.
Dickens is perhaps best known for bringing to life areas of London and parts of the capital are still evocative of his characters and storylines.
Stephen explains: "It is hard to choose a favourite location but maybe the Strand, where he walked both as a boy and as a man up to his offices in Wellington Street. I always see him here striding purposely in his flamboyant waistcoats.
"He was very famous and people would often double back to get another look at him. Or around the Bank of England where Scrooge would prowl. Smithfield too is one of his favourite locations."
The Smithfield market area of London is featured in Great Expectations, Martin Chuzzlewit, Little Dorrit and as a route Oliver Twist and Bill Sikes take on their way to rob a house.
"I also l...

Baby Bird project by Gavin Parsons, Britain - Dec 2011
FULL WORDS: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/drxe
An adorable project shows the baby birds of Britain in the first days of their lives.
Wildlife photographer Gavin Parsons has worked closely with UK rescue centres to capture chicks bought in for care.
He has spent the last three years photographing some of the baby birds bought into Folly Wildlife Rescue in Sussex and the RSPCA Wildlife Rescue Centre West Hatch in Somerset.
Each year hundreds of hatchlings are bought to rescue centres either after their nests have been disturbed or when they have been mistakenly picked up by well-meaning members of the public after they have fledged.

Dexter, a two-year-old moggy playing with a mouse
The Real Life Tom and Jerry: Cat Plays Ball with Mouse
This is the incredible moment a cat shows off its ball skills - by batting a mouse into the air.
Whatever kind of day most people have had it will not be as bad as the unsuspecting mouse that ended up becoming dish of the day for this playful cat.
These astonishing images were taken by amateur photographer Angelo DeSantis who arrived home to find his two-year-old cat Dexter playing with a mouse.
Mr DeSantis captured the once-in-a-life-time shot of Dexter throwing the mouse into the air with such force the mouse does a somersault.
Meanwhile Dexter is posed like an American ball player just after hitting the ball.
Mr DeSantis arrived back to his house in Grass Valley, California after visiting his parents-in-law and quickly grabbed his camera when he caught sight of Dexter playing Cat and Mouse.
He explained: "I found Dexter in the garden playing with what I thought were leaves but when I looked closer I realised it was a mouse.
"He was playing with it just like he does with his stuffed toys.
"I grabbed my camera and started taking some action shots of Dexter playing and I was lucky enough to capture Dexter throwing the mouse into the air.
"The poor mouse looked like it was doing some kind of gymnastics."
While Dexter's family were away he began to play and at one point the frolicsome pussycat teased the mouse by letting it go and then doing a nose dive to pin it back down.
One of images also shows what appears to be Dexter putting the mouse into a headlock while wrestling it to the floor.
"He often brings mice home but I have never witnessed him playing with his food in such a way before," Angelo said.

Eva Longoria shopping at the trendy store Intuition. After she left, we asked a sales girl what she bought. She told us a cute story. She said Eva noticed someone in LA with the store's new 'Market Bag' so she called up last week and ordered one with her initials on it. Maybe she will come back at the end of July and get a new one with EP as the initials as she becomes Eva Parker (Mrs. Tony Parker) in early July. The bag retails for $95.00
