ANCIENT RUIN COHOCH MUL, COBA, YUCATAN PENINSULA, MEXICO
KOHUNLICH with its great mask (400-600 A.D.) lies in dense jungle on the border with Belize and was not discovered until 1912. Deep in the rain-forest near TULUM lie the ruins of what was once the great Mayan city of COBA. Only by following narrow jungle paths can you reach the ³Nohoch Mul², the highest pyramid in the Yucatán. Its 120 steps reach a height of 138 ft. (FOTO: DUKAS/MICHAEL FRIEDEL)

MAYAN TEMPLE TULUM, YUCATAN PENINSULA, MEXICO
In the year 1518 members of the first Spanish expeditionary force were sailing along the coast when, to their astonishment, they discovered a city: "so large that we could not have thought the city of Seville itself to be larger or finer....We saw a very tall tower..." At this period TULUM was still a bustling, densely populated city. Today the fortified city only comes to life at certain times, from 7am to 5pm daily. (FOTO: DUKAS/MICHAEL FRIEDEL)

MAHAHUAL, COSTA MAYA, YUCATAN PENINSULA, MEXICO
The village of Mahahual, once a small community of fishermen, is now housing a large ocean terminal for cruise ships. Plastic chairs, umbrellas and excursion boats are waiting for the guests coming three to four times a week. About 500 inhabitants are visited by up to 7.000 cruise ship passengers. They only come for a few hours and the locals are trying to sell anything from beer to souveniers. Between the invasions Mahahual is once more a sleeping and romantic beach. Mahahual is the main spot on the now developping Costa Maya. (FOTO: DUKAS/MICHAEL FRIEDEL)

    DUKAS_07307307_FRI
BEACH OF PLAYA DEL CARMEN, RIVIERA MAYA, YUCATAN PENINSULA, MEXICO
RIVIERA MAYA and COSTA MAYA are new names for holiday areas along the coast of QUINTANA ROO. Deserted, unspoilt beaches alternate with large, ultra-modern tourist developments. In PLAYA DEL CARMEN, on the RIVIERA MAYA, a mixture of large hotel complexes and numerous individual hotels has grown up. Knut Wehner writes about the unique holiday attraction of the Yucatán, which blends Mayan culture with the essence of the Caribbean.

SOUVENIR SHOP, COZUMEL ISLAND, YUCATAN, MEXICO
COZUMEL, the island where it all began. Since 1927 it has had regular air connections with the USA. In the mid-1950s the first hotel was opened and in the 1960s the cruise-ships arrived. By the early 1970s international tourism was well on its way. In recent years COZUMEL has become the capital of Caribbean cruising, with moorings for 9 ships at a time, or over 800 per year. PUNTA CANCÚN, the northernmost point of the 21km (13 miles) long island of CANCÚN which is only 400m wide at its widest point. The ZONA TURISTICA comprises, in addition to its giant hotels, a congress centre, a disco centre and a shopping centre. It was in 1969 that this "test-tube" holiday resort was designed on the drawing-board and then realized and developed by the Mexicans into the world's must successful tourist complex. EL FARO, PLAYA DEL CARMEN, RIVIERA MAYA, YUCATAN PENINSULA, MEXICO
Since first light the radio beacon in the EL FARO hotel's private lighthouse has closed down and will not operate again until sunset as an official guide to shipping in the narrow straits between PLAYA DEL CARMEN and COZUMEL. The earliest guests are taking their morning bathe on the still empty beach, where soon a colourful crowd of international sunworshippers as well as many Mexicans will be romping. The CENOTE of XKEKEN in Dzitnup near Valladolid. The entrance starts in a low narrow cave and ends in an imposing limestone cavern. The sun's rays fall through two small holes in the roof on to the clear water of the underground lake. Small fish swim in the cool water and bathing is allowed. These subterranean rivers and lakes were the main source of drinking-water for ancient Yucatán and still are today. (FOTO: DUKAS/MICHAEL FRIEDEL)

CAVE DIVING, GRAND CENOTE, TULUM, YUCATAN PENINSULA, MEXICO
The GRAND CENOTE, between Tulum and Coba, is an entrance to the subterranean river system of the SAC ACTUN. Divers from Aquatech, in Villas Derosa, explore the watercourse between strange-looking stalactites and stalagmites. A stretch of 4328m (over a quarter-mile) of the 17.4 m (57ft) deep river has been mapped in recent years. The divers require special training and a cave-diving certificate. CHICHÉN ITZÁ and its pyramid of KUKULKÁN (the Plumed Serpent). The 24m (79 ft) high pyramid conceals a deep cosmic symbolism. Twice a year, at the equinox, it is the scene of a phenomenon that was only discovered 20 years ago: the form of a snake which, in the shifting pattern of light and shade, appears to wriggle down the pyramid, ending at a stone serpent's head. BACALAR and LAS LAGUNAS DE SIETE COLORES, the "lagoons of seven colours" set in the green bush-landscape of southern Yucatán. The little township with its fort, built in 1733, was once an important Spanish settlement and military stronghold. The big fresh-water lake, with its 90m (300ft) deep CENOTE AZUL, is a favourite weekend resort for the inhabitants of Chetumal, the provincial capital. (FOTO: DUKAS/MICHAEL FRIEDEL)
