Street vendors selling fresh meat by the side of the Barda-Dordyol road. Open-air butchers' shops do not meet sanitary requirements and are seasonal. Meat prices have increased dramatically in less than a year, 36% for mutton and 13% for beef.

Azerbaijan has a climate conducive to agriculture production. The agricultural sector contributes nearly 12 per cent to the nationÕs GDP. However, the lack of modernisation means that productivity is relatively low. This means that a lot of its food is imported when there is short supply in-country. One of the main commodities imported is wheat and grains. Last year, domestic wheat production was down 33 per cent compared to the year before due to bad weather, meaning more had to be imported, mainly from Russian and Kazakhstan. With RussiaÕs export ban, Azerbaijan is even more vulnerable to price volatility. Food prices increased by 20 per cent in December 2010, compared to December 2009. Such increases, are bad news particularly for the poorest people, like those in Barda, who are finding it harder and harder to afford basic food supplies.
