Tightened security at RAF Marham in Norfolk as people arrive for Family Day
Family day at RAF Marham, Norfolk, UK - 21 Jul 2016
Security was stepped up at RAF Marham in Norfolk today (Thurs) as a planned Families Day went ahead - despite a serviceman being threatened with a knife at the base yesterday. Extra RAF and civilian police with dogs patrolled the base as families and friends of service personnel arrived for the private event, which will include an air show this afternoon. Visitors also had their bags searched before being allowed into the base, which is home to almost 10,000 people, including members of the RAF, Navy, Army and staff. The tightened security comes after an off duty member of the armed forces was approached by two men in the Burnthouse Road/ Ladywood Road area, near to the base's married quarters, yesterday around 3.30pm. He was unharmed and the men managed to get away in a dark coloured car. Norfolk Police closed roads around the airbase following the incident and are continuing to investigate today.
