It might seem a nightmare for trying to avoid pine needle drops, but a different take on the Christmas tree tradition, that's for sure.

Photographer Valerio Berdini spent days walking the streets of Lisbon, trying to put into pictures the most peculiar of Portuguese feelings: 'Saudade'.

Saudade is a Portuguese word that has no direct translation in English.

It describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing may never return.

Illegal gold mining in Colombia - May 2015
    FULL COPY: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/r9gl

In Columbia the cocaine business has become less important than in past years. It is the land now, with its enormous riches hidden in the subsoil, and the consequent lucrative management of extraction, inflaming economic interest and violence.

The gold fever has returned, supported by the exchange rate of 1111 dollars per ounce, almost 32 euros per gram.

Photojournalist Erberto Zani spent time with workers toiling in a trecherous illegal mine in Carrizal.

Witnessing nightmare conditions in cramped and poorly ventilated spaces, up to 500m under the earth, he experienced the dread of rapidly rising waters when an old pump at surface level broke down and the tunnels began began to flood.

    *Full story: https://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/t5rq
As Northern Ireland goes to the polls today (2 March 2017) photographer Valerio Berdini has released a photo collection exploring the troubled history of the country. Voters in Northern Ireland are voting today as part of the Assembly Election following the resignation of former Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness. Valerio comments: "As part of an ongoing series of projects exploring Brexit and the repercussion on the United Kingdom equilibrium, series explores Northern Ireland in its most controversial history". "The Troubles" is the common name for the conflict that distressed Northern Ireland. It began in the late 60s and ended with the Belfast "Good Friday" Agreement of '98.

Calamantina and her four year old daughter Lopa who has cholera and other child sit outside the health clinic where a drip is hung from a nearby tree.
Calamantina says, "I have experienced death of my children from cholera. In 2006, three of my children died from cholera and now this is the second time it is here.
At that time my children started vomiting and had diarrhoea. After three days, one passed away. The following day, another passed away and after five days, my ten year old son passed away.
Lopa is still somehow sick and Iâm worried about that. Sheâs in a lot of pain â her stomach. When she goes to the toilet, itâs just liquid.
My other children passed away because there was no proper treatment like weâre having now. Iâm asking the Government to increase the work theyâre doing here to help my children. Itâs the Governmentâs responsibility."
Thousands Of Children's Lives At Risk As Deadly Cholera Outbreak Spreads Through Sudan
Save The Children has reported today (11 July) that Cholera is likely to put thousands of more lives at risk as South Sudan is facing one of the worst humanitarian crises on the continent,

The latest cholera outbreak in the Torit County is growing rapidly and illustrates how the highly infectious disease is quickly spreading throughout the country.

This is the latest outbreak of a disease that has already contaminated over 2,600 people and killed more than 60 since the first cases were reported by Save The Children in Juba on 15th May.

Cholera causes severe vomiting and diarrhoea among children and adults, which in turn leads to severe dehydration and, if treatment is not provided rapidly, ...

World's Biggest Underground Trampoline Set to Open in Snowdonia
The world's first underground trampoline is set to open this Friday (4 July) in Snowdonia.

Thrill Seekers who may have already visited Europe's largest zip wire in north Wales, now have another reason to return.

This giant underground playground is the first of its kind in the world. The attraction has already received huge interest with over 160 people already booked on.

Bounce Below will bring trampolining to a new terrain.
Unlike anything seen before, three huge trampolines will hang in the old slate cavern at varying levels, linked together by 60ft slides.

Visitor enjoying Bounce Below will be taken to the impressive 100 x 60 foot cavern, which sits by an old mining train and kitted out in special overalls and a helmet before being let loose in the caves to bounce, climb and slide in the most unique setting.

The walls are kitted out with techni-coloured lights which illuminate the subterranean background with vibrant colours.

The LED lights also reveal the beauty of the underground cavern, which was dug out by hand for 4500 hours to remove 500 tons of rubble in a process akin to the slate mining that took place there.

Bounce Below is part of the Zip World group that won international acclaim last March when they installed a pair of mile long zip lines at Zip World Velocity, that sees riders fly through the skies at over 100mph, 500ft in the air.

Zip World Titan opened last month (5 June), is another new site by the team behind ZipWorld.

Both attractions follow the opening of Zip World Velocity at Penrhyn Qquarry, Bethesda, which won international a...

Lion found hanged to death at Surabaya Zoo, which has been dubbed the 'zoo of death', Indonesia - 08 Jan 2014
An African lion has been dead in its cage at an Indonesian zoo dubbed the 'Zoo of Death'.

18-month-old male lion Michael was found tangled in steel cables used to protect keepers.

His death came 48 hours after a wildebeest corpse was discovered and following a long line of similar animal deaths.

With 43 deaths between July and September last year, Surabaya has been criticised for poor treatment of animals and called the world's cruellest zoo.

Spokesman Agus Supangkat said: "Michael was found dead on Tuesday morning when the zoo keeper was checking his cage."

The zoo uses steel cables to secure cages so keepers did not have to open or close the cage door with their hands, a safety precaution which prevents them from being attacked by the animals when they are being moved from one cage to another.

Agus added: "We are still investigating how the steel cables could entrap the African lion's head.

"Michael was relatively young. It could be that he was playing around and somehow his head got stuck."

Police are investigating the lion's death and the corpse has already been removed and autopsied.

On Sunday evening a wildebeest was found dead in its cage after its deteriorating health had been noticed several days prior to its death.

Agus said an autopsy showed an intestinal complication as the cause of death.

The issue raised speculation that poor maintenance and upkeep of the animals had contributed to the death.

These two deaths follow a string of animal casualties at Surabaya Zoo.

Previously, the attraction has been condemned for the death of a giraffe which was found with 20 kilograms of plastic in its stomach, and for the death of a Sumatran tiger found with a rotten digestive tract after being regula...

WOOD You Believe it... Incredible Sculptures Carved Entirely From Wood
Wood you believe it? These intricate sculptures have been carved entirely from wood.

Tom Eckert painstakingly carves the wood to make forms that include incredibly realistic renditions of fabrics, glass, stone and fruit.

The Arizona-based artist uses traditional techniques to create the impressive works, which are then delicately painted to add realism.

Highlights include plush looking towels, silk knickers draped from a draw and a table with ultra realistic apples and a knife on top.

Other works offer optical illusions such as large pebbles appear to float in the air atop silky fabrics.

Tom explains: "My sculptures are formed entirely of wood and then painted. I use traditional processes to carve, construct, laminate and paint my pieces. The woods I prefer working with are basswood, linden and limewood (all very similar) chosen because they carve and paint well and are very stable.

"Coming from a painting and drawing background, I am still interested in applying some of those techniques to my sculptures. My choice of paint is mostly waterborne lacquer applied using both spray guns and brushes

"Forms carved to suggest cloth recur in many of my pieces. By tradition, cloth has been widely used to conceal and shroud objects in practices ranging from advertising to church rituals. Covered forms are often more evocative - with a sense of mystery absent from the uncovered object by itself. I remember in church one Lent, as a child, being mystified while gazing at the statues shrouded with purple cloth.

"Cloth carved of wood has much different structural qualities than real cloth. When...

Photographer Valerio Berdini captured Japan's spectacular cherry blossom in all its glory.

The photos, taken in 2013, have been released ahead of the upcoming spring blossom, which begins each year at the end of March.

Valerio said: "Each year, thousands of people fill the parks to hold feasts under the flowering trees, and sometimes these parties go on until late at night. In Japan, cherry blossoms symbolise 'clouds'. Due to their nature of blooming en masse, besides being an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life. The transience of the blossoms, the extreme beauty and quick death, has often been associated with mortality."
