Europe's Grand Canyon - Exploring the Verdon Gorge.

Outdoor sports enthusiasts are spoiled for choice among the breath-taking landscapes of France's Verdon Gorge. Although the base of the gorge was only explored for the first time a century ago, today the Verdon is a major centre for canoeing and canyoning, rock climbing and rafting, wildlife watching, and local and long-distance walks.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Visitors to France's break-taking Verdon Gorge, one of the greatest geological marvels of Europe, need a head for heights. From the popular vantage point of the Escalès belvedere, along the eponymously-named Route des Crêtes, 300-metre vertical cliffs plunge down into the chasm of the Verdon River and the narrow passage known as Samson's Corridor. To the north lie stunning panoramas of the Alpine peaks, while the Verdon itself snakes southwards, through rock-cut passages, to the plains and undulating hills of Provence beyond.

The Route des Crêtes is a meeting point for Europe's top rock climbers attracted by dozens of climbs criss-crossing the impressive slabs of vertical rock which are also training grounds for local firemen and outward bound enthusiasts. At river level, other adrenalin-rush sports include canoeing and canyoning, white water rafting and aquarando, a combination of river walking, rock scrambling and floating downstream.

As well as the gorge the Verdon area comprises five artificial lakes, dammed after the Second World War to provide hydro electricity. Largest of the lakes is ...

'State of Mine' self portrait by Egor Bashakov made of 2,300 pin badges
    Pin-Badge Portrait
    PIN-BADGE PORTRAIT

We can PIN a reason on why this self portrait is so good - it's made entirely of BADGES.

Russian artist Egor Bashakov painstakingly stuck 2,300 of them to a plywood board to make his eye-catching artwork.

And amazingly, the 22-year-old created a DIFFERENT design for every single one-inch pin.

He then had to arrange the black and white badges so they blended together to form his features.

The artist from Saint Petersburg took more than a month to complete the work, which measures 135 x 110 cm (53 x 39ins) and is called 'State of Mine'.

He decided to put spontaneous thoughts, symbols and ideas on the badges to give an idea of what goes on in his head.

"By doing this work I wanted to create a structural portrait that looks like it is made up of molecules," Egor explains. "I tried to visualise and interpret my own essence, by splitting it into hundreds of different aspects and using them as ingredients.

"I tried to show my psychological and physical condition, so I developed each badge and arranged them to make my portrait."

The work has been exhibited in Sweden and Russia, but if you have some spare PIN money you can buy it for yourself.

LONG-LOST BROTHER AND SISTER LIVE JUST 300 YARDS APART

A brother and sister have been reunited after nearly 40 years apart - only to find they had been living just 300 yards from each another.

When Ken Whitty, 64, tracked down his younger sister Yvonne he was shocked to discover he had walked past her house, and even Yvonne herself, countless times over the years. He'd had seen her in her garden, never knowing it was his sister.

He has now spent Christmas and the New Year introducing "our kid" Yvonne, 62, to her new extended family, who, unbeknownst to her, have been living just around the corner from her home in Reddish for years.

Ken and Yvonne grew up together in Ordsall, Salford, but their parents died when they were still young children and they were placed into the care of a family friend.

The siblings stayed in touch after Ken left home at 21 but lost contact when he went to visit her house in Moss Side and found it had been demolished in a slum clearance programme.

Both went their separate ways, embarking on their adult lives in homes around Manchester and never knowing what had happened to one another.

Ken became a joiner, met and married his wife Carolyn and had four children and six grandchildren. Yvonne also married and had four children and ten grandchildren.

After several failed attempts to contact his sister down the years, Ken wrote to the Manchester Evening News' 'In Touch' column just before Christmas looking for information.

He said: "I've tried lots of different avenues over the years and it all came to nothing. I often wondered what had happened to our kid and I thought we would eventually get back in touch, but time we...

The farmer who brought us Britain's biggest bullock has found another record breaker - measuring 6ft 3in tall.
Arthur Duckett, 78, reckons massive Field Marshall, his six-year-old Charolet bull, weighing in at 1,360 kilos will be crowned the nations biggest. Arthur, a farmer, from Burnham-on-sea, Somerset, immediately saw the bull's potential, and said it will put on 300 kilos in the next year. He bought the white bullock two years ago and decided to keep it as a pet when he realised it was a one-off.
Two years ago Arthur and his wife Helen broke records with their 6ft 5in bull Colonel, who weighed 3,500lbs. The Colonel and Field Marshall are kept in a 22-acre field on Arthur's farm, and is in good company as he shares the plot with a 5ft 6in tall Highland steer called The Captain. 717981h
