  • The Cofiwch Dryweryn mural
    DUKAS_152799585_EYE
    The Cofiwch Dryweryn mural
Cofiwch Dryweryn is a graffitied stone wall near Llanrhystud, Ceredigion. Author and journalist Meic Stephens originally painted the words onto the wall of a ruined farm cottage in the early 1960s following the decision by the Liverpool City Council to flood the Tryweryn Valley, including the community of Capel Celyn, to create the Llyn Celyn reservoir. It has been vandalised on numerous occasions but every time it has been rebuilt or repainted immediately. The phrase "Cofiwch Dryweryn" has itself become a prominent political slogan for Welsh nationalism, appearing on T-shirts and banners, as well as replica murals all over Wales. Capturing Britain's week of mourning for the Queen - a photo essay.
Memories and reflections from the GuardianÕs team of photographers on recording a historic week.

The public have turned out in their thousands to pay their respects to the Queen, some perhaps motivated by wanting to be part of the historic moment, and many by a personal sense of loss and grief.

Here, Guardian photographers discuss how they have found shooting the ceremonial and informal aspects of mourning for the Queen over the last week.

Rembrandt's Night Watch paint recipe offers clues to the perfect wall filler.
Analysis of 17th-century masterpiece by Dulux scientists revealed several ways of creating the perfect impasto.

The secrets of Rembrandt's painting technique on The Night Watch remain lost to time for now. But researchers tasked with solving the mystery believe they may at least have gleaned some clues as to the perfect recipe for wall filler.

Scientists at AkzoNobel, the Dutch owners of Dulux paints, have been working since 2019 with conservators at AmsterdamÕs Rijksmuseum on the restoration of Rembrandt's masterpiece, building a better picture of how the 17th-century painter worked.

A key objective for Gerard van Ewijk, AkzoNobel's research and development manager, has been to uncover the recipe used by Rembrandt in his impasto technique, where paint is layered thickly enough to stand out from the canvas.
