    NEWS - Smog in Indien
November 7, 2018 - Kolkata, India - Corporate Buildings are seen shrouded in smog in Kolkata , West Bengal on 7,November 2018.Air pollution in the last 24 hours, in the immediate runup to the twin Kali Puja and Diwali festivals. The average PM2.5 concentration (the mean of figures calculated between 6pm on Monday to 6pm on Tuesday) stood at 121µg/m3 , more than double the safe limit of 60µg/m3 . Environmentalists said that lighting fireworks, which began on Sunday evening, continued on Monday night with greater gusto and its impact on the environment was immediate. The spike is in stark contrast to the healthy air quality index (hovering around the 50 mark) of the city last week after an untimely spell of rain cleansed the air of pollutants. “Every year, Kali Puja and Diwali cause cause irreversible damage to the environment and death to the environment and death to innumerable insects and birds. The air, which gets polluted at this time, keeps worsening unless another rain spell cleanses the air,” said said Subhas Dutta, who wants to move the apex court with definite evidence (FOTO: DUKAS/ZUMA)
