A skyscraper that will be the tallest building in the USA and fifth tallest in the world, has been given planning permission.

The Legends Tower was designed by California-based architecture studio AO for the city of Oklahoma for developer Matteson Capital

The proposed plans put the $1.5 billion skyscraper at 581 metres tall, significantly higher than the current tallest structure – the Freedom Tower in New York, which is 541 metres.

The building will house hotels, residences and commercial space.

The application was originally put forward earlier this year, with a height of 533 metres.

Shortly afterwards, the developer announced that they had changed the plans and were asking permission from the city to build at the currently approved height.

Construction is planned to begin this autumn.

A spokesperson for AO said when completed the tower, for the development called Boardwalk at Bricktown, will “across the globe.”

The Oklahoma city council this week approved the development which also includes three smaller structures.

The spokesperson added: "We are grateful that the City Council has embraced the vision of Matteson Capital and the entire design team to transform the city into a global destination.”

The world's tallest building is the 828 metre Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The world’s tallest observation wheel, standing at over 250 metres, has been unveiled. The record-breaking Ain Dubai monument offers unrivalled 360-degree views of Dubai the UAE.The 48 passenger cabins that circle the enormous circumference of the wheel have capacity to carry more than 1,750 visitors at once.It dwarfs the landmark London Eye which in comparison is a mere135m.Each rotation takes approximately 38 minutes. The structure is supported by 35m deep piles are under each of its four legs The hubs with an internal diameter of 6.25 metres are made of 200mm thick very high-grade steel, skilfully rolled, welded and machined to extreme tolerances of circularity. The hubs and spindle assembly is approximately 40 metres long and 20 metres high and weigh a massive 1,805 tonnes - equivalent to four A380 aircrafts. Each rim section weighs roughly the same as two Airbus A380 aircrafts and was craned onto five temporary supports with two 115-metre temporary rigid spokes before connection to the hub.
