The Awe Inspiring South Island
With its awe inspiring natural scenery any visit to New Zealand's South Island is guaranteed to take your breathe away.
Covering some 151,215 square kilometres (58,384 sq mi) it is the larger of the two major islands of New Zealand, though the smaller North Island is the more populous.
These beautiful islands are bordered to the north by the Cook Strait, to the west by the Tasman Sea and to the south and east by the Pacific Ocean.
South Island is characterised by grand open landscapes with the island divided by a backbone of mountains called the Southern Alps.
Visitors to this breathtaking island are guaranteed incredible vistas that include spectacular mountains and fiords, large beech forests, golden sand beaches and broad plains.
South Island highlights include Christchurch, Aoraki/Mount Cook, West Coast, Te Anau and Fiordland, Queenstown and Wanaka, Fox and the Franz Josef Glaciers, Milford and Doubtful Sounds, Hanmer Hot Springs to name a few.
Christchurch is the largest city on the island and is a major stepping off point for touring the rest of what the island has to offer. It lies in the region of Canterbury and is mainly composed of the Canterbury Plains and the surrounding mountains.
The city was established in 1850 by English settlers and this is still reflected today through its older buildings.
In particular these English influences can be seen in the Anglican Cathedral that takes pride of place the Square in the very centre of the city.
Here, tourists can enjoy the city's vibrant nightlife, award-winning restaurants and cafes, heritage architecture as well as impressive modern buildings, a lively arts and entertainment scene, fashion shopping and easy access to beaches and mountains.
Christchurch is also known as the Garden City and its na...
