THE TRAINING OF RAF MEN FOR NIGHT FLYING AND MAINTENANCE WORK
With the great battle for air supremacy which the RAF is now waging against the German Air force the thorough training is given to our pilots and air crew is now daily proving its worth against an enemy still numerically times more powerful. Skilled instructors, may of whom have actually taken part in operations against the enemy, take the cadet pilots and air crew through the various stages of their training until they win the coveted "Wings" or Air gunner" badges. Even then further 'operational' training including night flying and maintenance work in service type aircraft with the newly passed pilots and crews working as complete units is given, before the airmen are reckoned fit to take their places in the battle.

Umbrellas For British
James Ince , as well as making umbrellas and parasols of the sort we see in the street , makes those enormous umbrellas which throw charming shadows in the wrong places from above continental cafe tables . Here two workers are stitching the huge sections together , and attaching the essential tassels to the edge.

Busy in the watch room of the old King's Bench prison (where Smollet served a term, and Dickens placed Micawber) wood carvers are still cutting up rough special work for the new Houses of Parliament. The main buildings were demolished in 1869 and the firm E.J. Bradford - stone and wood carvers occupy the watch room.
Seen here Mr J Senyard carving a coat of arms in wood in the watch room of the old King's Bench Prison, Southwark, London, England.

PETROL DRIVEN PACHYDERM MEETS THE MARGATE CROWDS
1200 lb elephant which arrived at Margate yesterday to delight the crowds and take the kiddies for rides was not interested in buns and has never seen the jungle .
Jeannie , although most realistic to look at , is purely mechanical , petrol driven but can move its trunk and head and walk . Mr . Frank Stuart , the inventor , who has had orders for replicas from many parts of the world , has had to apply for a road licence for the elephant .

Munich Germany : If you've got tired feet, tyred feet is the answer according to 36 year old Munich medico Doctor Klaus Maertens.
Taking the pneumatic tyre as his example of air cushioned travel, Doctor Maertens figured that a ' walk-on-air-shoe ' would be a boon to lots of people who have steady walking or standing jobs. The result was an air-cushioned shoe sole which brings soft and elastic walking to tired feet. Thousands of tiny bubbles inside the moulded sole provide cushioning and at the same time insulation against extremes of heat and cold. It is claimed that the new sole is non-slip on any surface. Special medical arch supports are needed no longer by those accustomed to wear them, it is said, as every foot prints its indiviual form into the plastic material.
The air-cushioned sole is fixed to the shoe by heat. Here one of Doctor Klaus Maertens' assistants performs the operation by means of an electric soldering iron like instrument.
