Boys will be Girls / THE DRESSER

The oldest established all male revue ’This Was The Army’, running for nine years, ever since WWII. The idea was started by comedian Jack Lewis while in the Army where entertainment was improvised, when men made fun of, and made up for the shortage of women by dressing up and pretending to behave as women. Back in civvy street he set out with his wife Hazel to turn the joke into a commercial proposition. Jack provided the raw knockout Army sketches and Hazel (a former dancer) trained the chorus ‘girls’. The original cast has since broken up, apart from Sonnie Dawkes, the 30 year old ‘female’ lead. The popularity of the show has not diminished and audiences are treated to an evening’s entertainment where, as the poster says, ‘Every Lady is a Perfect Gentleman’.

    MASKS BEWITCHING
Make-up expert Max Factor, Jr, comes up with these startling designs for a Halloween mask. On actress model Jane Grant (left) he has applied a fetching lace heart with an eyebrow pencil. With Mary Goodrich (centre) he added some glittering eye shadow along with the eyebrow pencil. Again with Jane Grant (right) a bird wing mask was brushed on with ordinary eyelash make-up. The eyelashes were made with luminous eye shadow and the sequins with spirit gum.

If you want to look your worst for Hallowe'en, or to frighten the neighbours, here is how it can be done, demonstarted by Hollywood make-up man, Max Factor Jr. First you cram a cheap wig on backwards so that it covers your face, then you trim it not too carefully, sheep dog style, just under the eyes. Then draw eyes on your cheeks with eyebrow pencil, with nail whiting for pupils and whites, or stick on cut out eyes, but make the upper lip only a thin line. The result seen here is guaranteed to frighten even Dracula.
