Maggots - Housefly Larvae - Diptera - Potato - Animal India
Housefly larvae, or maggots, are seen on rotten potatoes in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on September 1, 2025. Flies are drawn to decaying organic matter such as spoiled vegetables, where they lay eggs. The eggs hatch into maggots that feed on the decay and can carry pathogens, before pupating and developing into adult flies. (Photo by Soumyabrata Roy/NurPhoto) -

Galapagos animal paradise
August 6, 2024 - Galapagos Islands, Ecuador: A nazca booby watches over its recently hatched youngling and an unhatched egg at its ground nest on Genovesa Island. The Galapagos archipelago is known for its rich animal life: wide variety of finches, swimming marine iguanas, flightless cormorant, fur seals living side by side with tropical animals, and many more species. The government of Ecuador designated part of the Galapagos a wildlife sanctuary in 1935, and in 1959 the sanctuary became the Galapagos National Park. In 1978 the islands were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, and in 1986 the Galapagos Marine Resources Reserve was created to protect the surrounding waters. Nate Hatch, aged 14, who is fighting for life after being shot in the head by disturbed schoolboy Jaylen Fryberg, 15, a Native American indian of the Tulahip Tribe, who shot dead a young female student and injured four others inside Washington's Marysville-Pilchuck High School cafeteria on Friday.
Jaylen Fryberg, schoolboy responsible for Shooting at Marysville High School, Washington DC, America - 24 Oct 2014
Three were shot in the head and one in the jaw and his shooting spree only stopped when heroic teacher Megan Silberberger ran into the cafeteria and grabbed his arm as he tried to reload. After a short struggle Fryberg pointed the gun at her before shooting himself dead. Jayberg, an avid hunter, who is described as a popular student and had recently been crowned a homecoming prince, appears to have gone on the rampage after being spurned by a girl he fancied who chose his cousin over him. In tweets he posted messages, including one before the shooting, in which he says: "Might as well die now" and "Your gonna piss me off...And then some shits gonna go down and I don't think you'll like it..." Shaylee is pictured with Jaylen here on her "open" Facebook page.

Continuous gale force winds and rough seas are having an effect on Britain's favourite sea bird - The Puffin. This puffin was blown underneath a caravan at Brean in Somerset. The RSPCA have 4 puffins in their rescue centre at West Hatch near Taunton in Somerset all suffering from being 'Wind Blown.' Not being strong enough to cope with 80mph winds and driving rain. The Puffins will stay with the RSPCA until they are stronger and the bad weather subsides

Seabirds getting into trouble because of the stormy weather, Somerset, Britain - 12 Feb 2014
Continuous gale force winds and rough seas are having an effect on Britain's sea birds. Dormant oil slicks on the bottom of the ocean from previous spills are being whipped up stormy weather and high winds are also making it difficult to fly. The RSPCA rescue centre at West Hatch near Taunton in Somerset is treating Razor Bills, Fulmar, and Guillimots for oil contamination. All the birds will stay with the RSPCA to be cleaned up and will be released back into the wild when they are stronger and the bad weather subsides. Meanwhile, the centre is also caring for 'wind blown' puffins who have found themselves unable to cope with 80mph winds and driving rain. They will also be released once the weather improves.

A juvenile goldfinch photographed at the RSPCA wildlife Rescue centre at West Hatch, Somerset. One of the UK's prettiest birds, the goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) is a stunning creature. The young don't have the characteristic reds and golds of the parents, but they are cheeky in interested little birds. This individual posed for the pictures looking around like a professional model and stayed in place for the few minutes of the shoot.

An adorable project shows the baby birds of Britain in the first days of their lives.
Wildlife photographer Gavin Parsons has worked closely with UK rescue centres to capture chicks bought in for care.
He has spent the last three years photographing some of the baby birds bought into Folly Wildlife Rescue in Sussex and the RSPCA Wildlife Rescue Centre West Hatch in Somerset.
Each year hundreds of hatchlings are bought to rescue centres either after their nests have been disturbed or when they have been mistakenly picked up by well-meaning members of the public after they have fledged.

A juvenile Blackbird photographed at the West Hatch RSPCA Wildlife Rescue centre as part of the Baby Birds art project.
Blackbirds (Turdus merula) are, of course, common throughout the UK. They like to nest in garden hedges and bushes, which as the weather turns in Spring are attacked by gardeners which often leads to the birds being disturbed. Of all the bird species bought into rescue centres, blackbirds are one of the most common. They are inquisitive, yet calm birds though and do not mind being photographed.

A moorhen chick photographed at the RSPCA Wildlife Hospital in West Hatch, Somerset, UK. Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) chicks are black balls of fluff with long legs sticking out the bottom. The red bill of the parents can just be seen starting to come through. Much daintier and elegant I think than the Coot, the moorhen is a shy bird in the countryside, but can be quite bold on town lakes.
