A newly hatched green sea turtle ready to be released
Tsunami survivor builds turtle sanctuary, Sri Lanka - Aug 2017
*Full story: https://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/tkel
When the devastating Boxing Day earthquake and tsunami struck in 2004 it killed some 35,000 people in Sri Lanka and caused widespread devastation. Charith Dilshan was one of the lucky ones. When the waves struck he, his mother, two sisters and brother, along with other villagers, survived by fleeing to a temple on a nearby hill. Though they survived with their lives Charith's family home was destroyed and they, like many, resettled further away from the coast. However, after his brush with death Charith developed a deepened appreciation for nature and a feeling of responsibility to protect it. As a Buddhist, he believes, 'If you respect nature, nature will respect you.' As such he decided to transform his family's beachfront land into a sea turtle hatchery and sanctuary, where he protects endangered sea turtle eggs until they can be safely released, and rehabilitates injured or disabled turtles that cannot survive on their own.

Baby robins hatched at Devon Wildlife Hospital, Newton Abbot, Britain - 30 March 2011
Spring really has arrived with the hatching of these three baby robins at Devon Wildlife Hospital in Newton Abbot. The cute trio are currently being fed each hour by dedicated staff at the hospital. However, that doesn't stop them from begging for an extra snack, just like they would do in the wild. As they are still young, it will be a while before the young birds develop their distinctive red breast of their species. The youngsters will be carefulyl cared for until they are old enough to be released into the wild.

RUB A DUB DUB THE DUCKS WITHOUT A TUB
Rub a dub dub these tiny ducklings could do with their own tub.
But for the time being the fluffy youngsters must be content gaining their water wings in a sink instead.
At least it's better than facing the freezing conditions outside on the pond, where the tiny new arrivals would surely have perished.
The born out of season youngsters found themselves in trouble after being born a whopping six months early.
Home is now the Secret World Animal Rescue Centre in Somerset where the ducklings have been introduced to the water for the first time.
Crowded together in the sink in the sanctuary's bathroom the gaggle seemed unconcerned by their lucky escape.
If they hadn't been discovered and had stayed out in the cold they wouldn't have been able to survive the cold nights.
Judging by their happy paddling it won't be long before the group graduate to swimming lessons in the bathtub.
Following that, they will be released onto a large pond next spring when they're all grown up.

A mother cat who lost her kittens at birth is nursing two baby ducklings, Sugito village, Saitama Prefecture, Japan - 23 Jul 2007
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Masatoshi Okauchi / Rex Features (677374h)
When Hiroko the cat's three kittens died she didn't have time to mourn their loss - she simply became surrogate mother to two ducklings.
The 3-year-old lost all her babies within days of them being born, but when her owners, Norio and Yoshiko Endo of Saitama Prefecture, Japan, accidentally left the cat with the newly hatched ducklings she immediately began caring for them as if they were her own. Mr Endo had bought a pair of spot-billed duck eggs from a local farmer, but when they hatched he shut Hiroko into the same room as the ducklings by mistake. When he re-entered the room he found the motherly pussy grooming the ducks and treating them as if they were her kittens and now the fluffy ducks have waddled into her life Hiroko is the happiest cat in town.
