Uraeus, the first outdoor public sculpture by artist Anselm Kiefer is seen at Rockefeller Square near Fifth Avenue in Manhattan in New York City on Wednesday, 02. The work is on display until July 22. The Ureaus, presented by Gagosian and organized by the Public Art Fund and Tishman Speyer, consists of a giant open book with eagle wings 30 feet long, made entirely of lead, on top of a 20-foot-high stainless steel column . Grouped around the base of the spine are even larger lead books, while a large snake coils the spine. Lead is one of the artist's preferred materials for its fluid and soft properties traditionally associated with alchemical transformation, especially its second stage: dissolution. Mandatory Credit: Photo by Tim Plowden/REX/Shutterstock (9251370ar)
A frail old Singaporean man taking his slow-paced daily walk is no threat to a family of 12 otters who have emerged from the mangrove river to scent mark the footpath on their way to hunting fish in the park pond. A cross section of Sinapore's younger generations watch this unique sight from a footbridge in the late afternoon sun. Otters will typically flee when anyone approaches, they are especially wary of curious young children who love to get close to these popular animals! Singapore's Smooth Coated Otter population has grown and expanded into urban areas in the past few years. You can tell when there are otters about by the small crowd of locals gathered at bridges to take videos with their smart phones!
A year in the life of an otter family, Singapore - 2017
    *Full story: https://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/tu8d
British photographer Tim Plowden lives in a wild corner of Singapore that is also called home by a family of smooth-coated otters. The photographer has been keeping track of the adorable animals throughout 2017 as they have successfully raised a clutch six cubs. Their territory stretches along several miles of coastline, a network of mangrove rivers as well as urbanised sections of river and parkland. And Tim isn't the only person to be enchanted by the furry family with many locals having also taken them to heart. Tim comments: ?The playfulness of the cubs is enchanting and I love how strong their family bonds are. They always look out for each other and if they are apart for any length of time they greet each other with such exuberance it makes you appreciate just how close their family ties really are".

In Columbia the cocaine business has become less important than in past years. It is the land now, with its enormous riches hidden in the subsoil, and the consequent lucrative management of extraction, inflaming economic interest and violence.

The gold fever has returned, supported by the exchange rate of 1111 dollars per ounce, almost 32 euros per gram.

Photojournalist Erberto Zani spent time with workers toiling in a trecherous illegal mine in Carrizal.

Witnessing nightmare conditions in cramped and poorly ventilated spaces, up to 500m under the earth, he experienced the dread of rapidly rising waters when an old pump at surface level broke down and the tunnels began began to flood.

World's Most Disgusting Treats At Grisly Cake Shop
It may seem a self-defeating idea, but a new cake-shop aims to turn the stomach of its customers.

The Eat Your Heart Out pop-up cake shop will offer some of the most grisly-looking 'treats' in the world.

Expertly-twisted bakers have created a range of cake-based products featuring realistic wounds, stitches and even chocolate hacked-off body parts filled with rum.

There are also fanciful depictions of the mythical kraken sea monster, including a blood-red mouth of kraken complete with a 100 individual hand-made chocolate teeth.

But perhaps most stomach-churning of all the delicacies is an interactive maggot extraction cupcake, which allows for mango flavoured maggots and puss to be removed with tweezers prior to eating.

Photographer Valerio Berdini captured Japan's spectacular cherry blossom in all its glory.

The photos, taken in 2013, have been released ahead of the upcoming spring blossom, which begins each year at the end of March.

Valerio said: "Each year, thousands of people fill the parks to hold feasts under the flowering trees, and sometimes these parties go on until late at night. In Japan, cherry blossoms symbolise 'clouds'. Due to their nature of blooming en masse, besides being an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life. The transience of the blossoms, the extreme beauty and quick death, has often been associated with mortality."

First ever advert especially for dogs is launched, Britain - 12 Feb 2012
The UK's first ever advert made especially for dogs is set to be launched on television. The barking-mad one-minute clip contains high frequency noises above 17,000 Hertz, which can only be heard by man's best friend. Alongside this, it is also features an ordinary soundtrack that animals and humans alike can hear. The ad's makers - Bakers dog food - hope the noise will attract a dog's attention and cause their human owners to take notice of what's on screen. The company tested the advert by playing it to 12 dogs that were being distracted with a toy. They found that all of them showed an interest in the noise and several approached the television screen to investigate further. Zara Boland, an animal expert from Bakers, said: "High-pitched frequencies cannot be heard by the vast majority of humans. But they appeal to dogs as their hearing is twice as sharp. Our experts have created an advert interspersed with high frequency noises that only canines should hear".

Spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) were especially curious about the camera set-up. Often they left teeth marks on the brass padlocks and steel camera casings.
Peek-A-Boo: The World Through The Lens Of A Kenyan Camera Trap
You're wandering the plains of Kenya and you spot a mysterious metal box. You wouldn't be able to stop yourself having a quick peek, would you?

That was seemingly the reaction of all creatures great and small when ecology student Blair Roberts placed camera traps in the wildlife-rich region.

The 26-year-old wanted to study the feeding patterns of Thomson gazelle, but found her equipment captured some amazing - and hilarious - sights.

A cheeky Patas monkey, already an unusual-looking species, appears almost alien-like as it moves so near to the camera that cannot focus.

Similarly, in a side-splitting trio of images, an olive baboon takes such a close peek its nose nearly touches the lens.

In another picture, a juvenile olive baboon appears to cast a dismissive glance sideways at the camera as it follows it mother.

Other highlights include a Jungle Book-style herd of elephants sauntering by, a fearsome rhino looks about to charge at the camera, and, at one point, a pair of inquisitive cattle herders stopping to peer into the lens.

There are also cameo appearances from impala, zebra, oryx and, seeming slightly shy, a giraffe and ostrich that only poke their heads into the frame.

Night-vision images reveal buffalo, hyena and Jackson's hartebeest - along with an African elephant shortly before it knocked the camera over and bent the support pole to a 45 degree angle.

Blair, from Louisville, Kentucky, uses the images as part of dissertation research in her fourth year as a PhD student in Princeton University's Ecology and Evolutionary Biology program.

Eland (Taurotragus oryx) were rare captures. They tend to be especially flighty around humans, so it is possible that my scent on the apparatus kept them away.

To celebrate the 21st anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope's deployment into space, astronomers at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md., pointed Hubble's eye at an especially photogenic pair of interacting galaxies called Arp 273. The larger of the spiral galaxies, known as UGC 1810, has a disk that is distorted into a rose-like shape by the gravitational tidal pull of the companion galaxy below it, known as UGC 1813. This image is a composite of Hubble Wide Field Camera 3 data taken on December 17, 2010, with three separate filters that allow a broad range of wavelengths covering the ultraviolet, blue, and red portions of the spectrum. Hubble was launched April 24, 1990, aboard Discovery's STS-31 mission. Hubble discoveries revolutionized nearly all areas of current astronomical research from planetary science to cosmology..

Now this girl is still being lovingly regarded by her peers, but expectations are that in a few years that will be different. For disabled women it is especially difficult to find a husband. Without husband a women will find herself an outcast as a woman without a man does not count.

OUT OF THE DUST - LIFE IN AFGHANISTAN

A powerful collection of images of everyday life in Afghanistan will be displayed for the first time in the UK in a new exhibition this summer.

'Out of the Dust - Life in Afghanistan' features images by Dutch photographer Hans Stakelbeek. The exhibition runs from 30 July-31 August 2008 at PM Gallery in west London.

In 2007 Hans Stakelbeek was commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to document the reconstruction of Afghanistan during the efforts to restore peace and stability to the country.

Stakelbeek made four trips last year, shooting in Kabul and Uruzgan, as well as other remote areas.

As the project developed, he also became interested in capturing the stories of the people he came to know, as well as the reconstruction efforts required by his official posting.

'Out of the Dust' presents a set of images that pays tribute to the determination of the Afghan people to survive and live as normally as possible through the upheaval - building homes, going to school and working and playing in testing and frightening times.

The collection gives a rare view of daily life in Afghanistan without a military slant and each photograph comes complete with Stakelbeek's own written comm...
