Now officially the fastest man in the world, Olympic winner and world record holder in the men's 100m and 200m, Usain Bolt has enjoyed a rapid rise to stardom from his humble beginnings as a young boy in Jamaica.
The Lightning Bolt
THE LIGHTNING BOLT
Now looking to become as much a Jamaican household name as Bob Marley or Marcus Garvey, Usain Bolt has taken the Beijing Olympics by storm.
His achievements of winning gold and breaking the world records in the 100m and 200m finals have somehow managed to overshadow even the heroics of American swimmer Michael Phelps and his record-breaking tally of gold medals in the pool.
Bolt was born August 21st 1986 and grew up in Trelawny, Jamaica, the son of Jennifer and Wellesley Bolt and brother to Sherine. By the time he was 15, Bolt had already reached his peak height of 6ft 5in, making him literally stand out from his peers. He was spurred on by an idolisation of Jamaican athletic heroes Herb McKenley and Don Quarrie, as well as his admiration for the great Michael Johnson of the USA.
What followed was a rise to the top of his profession almost as quick as his speed on the track itself. As a junior sprinter he began shattering records left, right and centre, fi...
