AFRICA-ELEPHANT-PROTECTION
(110725) -- NAIROBI, July 25, 2011 (Xinhua) -- Elephants played in Tsavo national park of Kenya, July 20, 2011. According to the Kenya Wild life service, the elephant of the whole African continent has faced extinction. In 1979, there were estimated to be 1.3 million elephants in Africa but by 1989 only 600,000 remained. This catastrophic loss was almost entirely due to the killing of elephants for their ivory. Currently, there are approximately 400,000 remain in Africa today. (Xinhua/Zhao Yingquan) (ypf)

Mother polar bear (Ursus maritimus) with two coy (cubs-of-year) on multi-year ice floes in the Barents Sea off the eastern side of Heleysundet in the Svalbard Archipelago, Norway. An adult male weighs around 400?680 kg (880?1,500 lb) while an adult female is about half that size. The IUCN now lists global warming as the most significant threat to the polar bear, primarily because the melting of its sea ice habitat reduces its ability to find sufficient food. The IUCN states, If climatic trends continue polar bears may become extirpated from most of their range within 100 years. On May 14, 2008, the United States Department of the Interior listed the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.

Lebanon Beirut Residents again adjust to crisis
The Bank of Lebanon, Hamra District, Beirut, Lebanon on August 9, 2006. Read any travel guide book on Lebanon and you will be informed that Beirut is a busy, vibrant city with many exclusive shops, restaurants and a thriving night life. However, with the constant Israeli bombardment and gradual ground offensive Beirut has become a shadow of its former self; many residents have fled to Syria, Cyprus or further afield to Europe and the US. Others have have left the city for the relative safety of the surrounding mountains or the north of the country. Those that remain rarely venture outside their apartments. Whilst some shops remain open many are closed and food and fuel are becoming harder to come by. Consequently, Beirut's once busy streets are now largely populated by refugees from the suburbs and the south of the country who have been forced from their homes by the Israeli military force.
