A three-year-old South African girl who suffered burns to 80% of her body is recovering well after receiving artificially-grown 'cloned' skin grafts. Pippie Kruger suffered serious whole body injuries after an accident at a braai (barbeque) at her home in Johannesburg, South Africa. The youngster suffered 3rd degree burns to 80% of her body and has been in hospital since the incident on New Year's Eve. Earlier this month Pippie underwent a groundbreaking operation that saw 41 pieces of 'cloned' skin, which was flown in from America, grafted onto her back, face, chest, arms and legs. As part of a highly experimental therapy, the skin was grown in a laboratory in Boston, Massachusetts using cells harvested from Pippie's body. Osprey chicks ringed as part of conservation efforts, Scottish borders, Scotland - 26 Jun 2012
Forestry Commission Wildlife Officer Tony Lightley needed a real head for heights today after climbing up to a lofty Osprey nest in the Scottish borders. He also had to avoid sharp talons and beaks and beating wings in an effort to retrieve several young chicks so they could be ringed. The youngsters have to be ringed for conservation reasons and it will also help wildlife officers gain an insight into their movements once they have left the nest. Previous chicks that have been born and raised in the same location have already been seen distributed around the country. This year the nest is home to two chicks - who were the first to be born in Scotland this year when they hatched last month. The parents have been using the nest since 2004 and have raised 17 chicks between them.

Watch The Claws Santa: Brave Father Christmas Gives Tigers Presents
A brave Santa Clause delivered early Christmas presents to Bashii, one of six Sumatran tigers at Australia Zoo.

The visit to the Sunshine Coast's Tiger Temple attraction saw the 115kg Sumatran tiger, and his friend Sunita, gifted edible treats and toys for his enclosure.

Santa was careful to avoid the claws when he got up close and personal to drop off wrapped gifts and feed Bashii with a milk bottle.

The tiger also impressed visitors by leaping for presents in a special tiger pool.

Australia Zoo's head of tigers and international conservation manager Giles Clark said the seasonal gifts didn't last long.

He explains: "From the moment Santa entered the Tiger Temple, Bashii was ready to pounce on the big bag of gifts that included milk treats and blow up Christmas trees and balls for the pool.

"Like any four year old, Bashii was pretty excited to see Santa and the trees and balls didn't last very long."

"We had quite a few patrons at the Tiger Temple watching Bashii and Sunita play with their new presents which is a great chance to educate people on the concerning situation with declining tiger numbers."

A new collection of photographs capture the beauty of underwater life.

Award-winning photographer Louise Murray has spent the majority of her years travelling the globe documenting awesome scenery and wildlife from every country she has visited.

During that time she has often dived underwater to photograph marine creatures amongst the coral reef.

Her latest collection was captured while diving in the dark waters of Tondoba Bay in the Red Sea of Egypt.

The fluorescent images occur when near an ultraviolet torch.

Highlights include a giant clam that appears dull under natural light but glows bright red under the blue hue; a pipefish hunting at night glows orange and camouflaged fish made visible by the ultraviolet torch reveal their florescent green pigment making them known to their prey.

In comparison to the muted browns, golds, pinks and blues of a coral reef during the daytime "it looks like Oxford Street at Christmas," says Louise.

The wildlife photographer uses a powerful blue light to stimulate photosensitive pigments in the marine life, which then emit fluorescent colours.

Louise explains: "Almost all these photographs were shot after dark as the sunlight masks the colours.

"The stronger the light the better the results, I have to filter my camera and eyes with a yellow mask so the true colours are revealed.

"It can be very exciting when I find a new kind of fish or crab that glows orange, yellow or red, as they are extremely rare."

The Pesky Penguin And The Window Cleaner
For most window cleaners a pesky penguin is not a hazard they would normally encounter.

But for Derek Youd having a curious penguin take an interest in him is all in a typical day's work.

For Derek is water services technician at Torquay's Living Coasts - a job that means he often gets up close and personal with the attraction's watery inhabitants.

One of Derek's duties is keeping the viewing windows at the aquarium clean - both in and out of the water.

As such he is used to nosy deep sea denizens taking more than a passing interest in him - from fishes coming in for a nibble to octopuses climbing over his head.

However, by far the most persistent of his window cleaning play mates is Solly the Macaroni Penguin.

During Derek's weekly clean of Solly's tank the playful penguin loves nothing better than lending a helpful flipper.

Unfortunately, Solly's idea of a good game involves him giving Derek a nip with his beak.

Derek comments: "Solly is unusual in that he was hand-reared.

"What we're trying to do is to stop them thinking of us divers as honorary penguins - that could mean he's more comfortable with humans than the other Macaronis that live in the aquarium.

"He swims down hoping to play with us when we're cleaning the inside of the aquarium windows about once a week - and he does give you a nip just to make you know he's up for a game - sometimes he nips you in places you don't particularly want".

However, a nice fish or two is enough to distract Solly from his game and give Derek chance to get on with his cleaning.

SO NEAR YET SO FAR FOR HUNGRY KINGFISHER

It can be a hard life being a young kingfisher - especially when mother has other hungry mouths to feed.

This female kingfisher was caught on camera teasing one of her brood by placing a fish into its beak - only to change her mind and snatch it back.

She then flew away to feed her second brood, which were newly hatched.

These photographs were captured by photographer Richard Austin at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust's centre at Slimbridge, Gloucestershire.

He said: "It was amazing to witness the kingfishers trying to persuade the parent to give them their fish."

Mr Austin added: "Now is a great time to see kingfishers because they are heading to and from the nest every 20 minutes or so."

    THE DISCO BABES IN ARMS

For parents who simply can't - or won't - let go of their dancing days a new breed of disco is emerging where mums, dads and toddlers can all boogie on down together.

It's 2.30 and the dancefloor is packed with both adults and children strutting their stuff to club classics - 2.30 in the afternoon that is.

Welcome the latest craze sweeping the nation - Baby Loves Disco (BLD). This 'dayclubbing' phenomenon has been sweeping the United States for the last three years ever since a waitress from Philadelphia had a rather bright idea.

The concept has now crossed the ocean - proving to be just as popular this side of the pond too.

Now in the coolest clubs nationwide eager parents and their children gather for a little lunchtime fun, complete with cheesy tunes, bubble machines, baskets of instruments, a chill-out room (with tents, books and puzzles), diaper changing stations, and a full spread of healthy snacks.

There is even a cash bar for mum and dad.

And while most discos operate a lower-age limit, BLD does the opposite; children must be no older than seven.

"Momtreprenuer" Heather Murphy hosted the first ever baby loves disco event three years ago at the small Philadelphia club where she worked, because she was after "something different to do with the kids".

And what had started out as a simple idea quickly grew to be an overnight sensation and fantastic business venture.

Now the concept is in over 22 cities across the U.S. Every single Baby Loves Disco starts in exactly the same wayand is ran as a franchise; a mom (or dad) "signs up" to launch and run the party. They then get shown the ropes and get help setting up t...

Emergency teams in Gloucester try to prevent the flood water rising any further at the power plant at Walham which feeds 500,000 local homes.
Flood barriers and thousands of sandbags are being used to protect the substation in Walham and dozens of firefighters and military personnel - including Ghurkas and the RAF - battled to protect the key installation, which is part of the national grid.
