Duel in the Pool begins with Bondi beach battle
The competition between swimming powerhouses Australia and the US returned to Sydney after a 15-year absence with a new twist

Australian and American swim stars gathered at Bondi Icebergs to observe the opening event of the three-day Duel in the Pool.

Australia v the United States, the two heavyweight swimming nations, head-to-head. Not at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, but at Bondi beach - the spiritual home of Australia's aquatic culture, the nation's very own swimming mecca. Not a duel in the pool but a battle from one end of Bondi beach to the other and back, and then out and back again - "four by almost 800 metres," one event organiser quipped, noting the difficulties of setting up an exact "course" in the middle of the ocean.

‘The trick is to make yourself useful’: a beginner’s guide to sailing
The trick is to make yourself useful: a beginner’s guide to sailing. Usually thought of as a rich man’s sport, you do not need to afford a yacht to sail one – the main cost is in becoming a competent crew member. Rosemary Bolger learns to sail with skipper David Kelly from East Sail onboard a 35ft yacht called Karma in Sydney harbour, Australia.

Round-the-world sailor Alex Thomson: 'I think the French are worried about us'
Round the World Yachtsman Alex Thomson onboard the 2019 Hugo Boss, Foiling IMOCA 60, built for the Vendee Globe Race. The round-the-world sailor is confident he can win the sport’s toughest race, the Vendée Globe, in his £5.5m boat.
Thomson has a new toy, and, judging by his Cheshire Cat grin, he likes it a lot. It is the latest in a line of boats called Hugo Boss, after the principal sponsor, and the one he hopes will finally deliver the prize he so craves.
The Vendee Globe is a single-handed non-stop yacht race around the world without assistance. The race was founded by Philippe Jeantot in 1989, and since 1992 has taken place every four years. It is named after the Departement of Vendee, in France, where the race starts and ends.
