Former football coach due to stand trial for sex abuse killed in car crash, Bottisham, Cambrigeshire, UK - 08 Jan 2019
A former youth football coach has died in a car crash on the day he was due to stand trial on sex abuse charges. Michael "Kit" Carson, 75, from Cambridge, was accused of the sexual abuse of boys under 16, from 1978 to 2009. He was due to stand trial yesterday (Mon) on 12 counts of indecent assault and one of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. Carson's red Mazda left the road on the A1303 at Bottisham in Cambridgeshire and hit a tree at 9.45am yesterday and he died at the scene. Francois Englert and Peter Higgs at the Higgs boson discovery announcement
CERN press conference in Geneva, Switzerland - 04 Jul 2012
Francois Englert (born 1932, left) and Peter Higgs (born 1929, right), Belgian and British theoretical physicists, at the Higgs boson discovery announcement, 4th July 2012, at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory). Data collected by the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) and ATLAS (a torodial LHC apparatus) experiments at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at CERN have shown a new particle at around 125 giga electron volts (GeV). Further analysis will determine if the particle is the long sought for Higgs boson, a fundamental particle that is thought to give other particles mass. Peter Higgs predicted its existence in 1964. Englert, along with Higgs and Robert Brout, explained how the Higgs field confers mass on other particles through their interaction with it. This is known as the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism.

Peter Higgs (b.1929), British theoretical physicist. In 1964, Higgs predicted the existence of a new type of fundamental particle, called the Higgs boson, that is thought to give other particles mass. This particle is required by many of the Grand Unified Theories (or GUTs) which hope to explain three of the fundamental forces (electromagnetism and the weak and the strong nuclear forces) in a single unified theory. The Higgs boson is yet to be detected experimentally, but it is one of the main challenges of high-energy particle accelerators such as the large hadron collider (LHC) at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory).

The Hot air balloon that collided with overhead power cables and an electricity pylon
Hot Air Balloon accident in Bozeat, Northants, Britain - Mar 2012
Two men and a woman were trapped in a hot air balloon for FIVE HOURS after it collided with overhead power cables and an electricity PYLON last night (Sun).
Pilot Adam Griffiths, 19 and his two passengers, believed to be teenagers, suffered minor burns when the balloon struck the pylon, which transmits 132,000 volts of electricity.
They were left suspended 15 METRES in the air from 6pm until 11pm as they waited for the power to the overhead cables to be turned off before they could be rescued.
The balloon's canopy wrapped around the power cables in the small village of Bozeat, near Wellingborough in Northamptonshire in what balloonists described as "a freak accident."
Mr Griffiths, who owns the Greyhound Balloon Team, based in Rushden, Northants, was out flying with five other balloons from the Chiltern Region Balloons and Airship club when the accident happened.
