Firemen at a shop which burned during an upsurge of inter-race riots in the African township of Newclare, near Johannesburg. Police and Africans exchanged shots, and the rioters were eventually dispersed. Five Indian owned shops were said to have been looted. Many of the Africans in the township rose in riot when police in two flying squad cars, who were checking Africans' passes tried to arrest a man. (FOTO:DUKAS/TOPFOTO)
