Inside High Bay 3 of the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the work platforms have been retracted from around the Artemis I Space Launch System on September 20, 2021. All ten levels of platforms were extended and retracted as part of an umbilical test. During the test, several umbilical arms on the mobile launcher were extended to connect to the SLS rocket. They swung away from the launch vehicle, just as they will on launch day. NASA and Jacobs teams will continue conducting tests inside the VAB before transporting the Orion spacecraft to the assembly building and stacking it atop the SLS, completing assembly of the rocket for the Artemis I mission. The space agency logos for the next spacecraft to head to the Moon have been added to Orion as part of the Artemis programme.
ESAÕs logo reflects our European nature and our pioneering activities in space. It incorporates the only element of ESAÕs name common to all languages of Member States - the letter ÔeÕ for European, which is symbol of cooperation and human dimension. Europe is represented by a circular ÔeÕ, superimposed on the globe that represents our planet Earth. The white dot represents a satellite in orbit. This symbol also incorporates the visionary side of space exploration and today is synonymous with a united Europe in space.
NASAÕs ÔwormÕ design was officially introduced in 1975 and was incorporated into many of the agencyÕs next-generation programmes. It was retired in 1992, but made a comeback in 2020 as a new, modern era of human spaceflight becomes reality.
Orion will display the logos on the first Artemis Orion spacecraft. The worm image, along with ESAÕs logo, were cut into flightproof decals by the Launch Equipment Shop at the Kennedy Space Center and adhered to the underside of OrionÕs crew module adapter.
ESA is providing the European Service Module for Orion, which is the powerhouse that fuels and propels the spacecraft. These bold images will be seen from cameras at the end of OrionÕs solar arrays as the spacecraft travels toward the Moon.Credit: ESA / eyevine

The shipping container holding the European Service Module (ESM) is moved out of the cargo hold of the Antonov cargo aircraft at the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Nov. 6, 2018. The ESM, built by the European Space Agency, will supply the main propulsion system and power to the Orion spacecraft for Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1), a mission to the Moon. The ESM also will house air and water for astronauts on future missions. EM-1 will be an uncrewed flight test that will provide a foundation for human deep space exploration to destinations beyond Earth orbit. This newlt-released imase shows the Orion spacecraft crew module for Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1) lifted into a test stand for pressure testing in the Neil Armstrong Operations & Checkout Building at NASA?s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. A team from NASA and Lockheed Martin is getting ready for Orion?s proof pressure testing, an evaluation that will help verify the structural integrity of Orion?s underlying structure known as the pressure vessel.
The work is an important milestone on Orion?s journey toward EM-1, its mission atop the Space Launch System rocket in 2018. EM-1 will not have humans aboard, but it will pave the way for future missions with astronauts and for missions to Mars. During this flight, Orion will travel thousands of miles beyond the moon over the course of about three weeks.
