A sticky substance found in a copper jar from an ancient Greek shrine has been identified as 2,500-year-old honey.
Researchers analysed the residue samples using modern analytical techniques.
Honey was an important substance in the ancient world, sometimes left in shrines as offerings to the gods or buried alongside the dead.
In 1954, one such underground Greek shrine dating to around 520 BC was discovered in a city originally founded by Ancient Greeks in Paestum, Southern Italy.
Inside were several bronze jars containing a sticky residue.
Three different teams over the course of 30 years examined the residue but concluded the jars contained animal or vegetable fat contaminated with pollen and insects.
But the residue later came to the Ashmolean Museum in the UK university city of Oxford for an exhibition.
A team got the chance to re-examine the mystery substance and collect new scientific evidence showing it to be honey and beeswax.
