Illegal gold mining in Colombia - May 2015
FULL COPY: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/r9gl
In Columbia the cocaine business has become less important than in past years. It is the land now, with its enormous riches hidden in the subsoil, and the consequent lucrative management of extraction, inflaming economic interest and violence.
The gold fever has returned, supported by the exchange rate of 1111 dollars per ounce, almost 32 euros per gram.
Photojournalist Erberto Zani spent time with workers toiling in a trecherous illegal mine in Carrizal.
Witnessing nightmare conditions in cramped and poorly ventilated spaces, up to 500m under the earth, he experienced the dread of rapidly rising waters when an old pump at surface level broke down and the tunnels began began to flood.

Raising a Family Behind Bars: Inmates Families Move Into Prison After Typhoon Haiyan
A New York-based photographer journeyed to the Philippines to meet families who were forced to relocate to prison after Typhoon Yolanda left them homeless.
Lawrence Sumulong went to the Leyte Provincial Jail in April this year, to document the unusual situation where a large number of displaced families have been forced to move in with their incarcerated relatives.
At the Leyte Provincial Jail, women and children walk freely among inmates.
While most inmates claim to be serving time for petty crimes such as theft or drug trafficking, their photo releases reveal many more are actually serving time for more serious crimes.
Lawrence shot the moving series in one day, and assembled the photos in a moving photo series titled Raising a Family Behind Bars.
Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) cut across nine regions in the central Philippines on November 8, 2013, leaving behind a wide swath of destruction.
The storm was a category five, with wind gusts up to 235 miles per hour, causing massive landslides and flooding.
Over 14 million people were affected, including five million who saw their homes damaged or destroyed, while over 6000 people lost their lives.
Lawrence wanted to investigate what had happened to the people who were left with nothing after the typhoon, and in particular those who had no choice but to take refuge in prison.
"My assignment was to verify whether families of the inmates were continuing to live inside the destroyed jail, which was a story that journalist, Aya Lowe had originally broken.
"Leading up to my trip, there was news that access to the jail was restricted and the families had long since relocated."
Lawrence, who currently works as a photo editor at Jazz in the Lincoln Centre, explains: ...

Travel To Burma: A Touch Of Freedom?
Has life become any easier for Burmese citizens? Has the recent "election" of a new government given reason for optimism?
Revisiting the country after almost a decade - and an encounter with Aung San Suu Kyi - leaves a mixed impression. Should we go there on holiday ?
Admittedly, a handful of well-stocked supermarkets in Yangon, some clubs and a few trendy restaurants were not there before. And after spending 15 out of the last 21 years in house arrest, "The Lady" is now free to move about. Nobody I met seemed to regret the generals' move to the countryside, after having built a grandiose monument to their own isolation in the brand new capital of Naypidaw, built at huge expense in a country remaining one of the world's poorest. There they comfortably reside, miles away and out of sight from the squalor and poverty to which they have sentenced their 50 million countrymen.
The November "election" did offer a few seats in the new parliament to a somewhat disorganised opposition, and in theory at least offers a forum for political dialogue - although the revised constitution guarantees the military continued power. Critics describe the new constitution as mere window dressing, camouflaging the regime's reluctance so far to engage in open public debate.
Regardless, little of this presents much hope to Yangon's homeless or the poor street hawkers and the merchants, still resigned to display their shoddy goods, cheap souvenirs and outdated magazines on the decrepit sidewalks of the city, plying their trade in the fumes from cars emitting grey clouds of exhaust - for those lucky enough to afford the scarce petrol. Nor does it change the lives of the rice farmers and oxcarts drivers in the countryside, or the destiny of women, hunched over small heaps of pebbles, fixing hole...

The World's First Amphibious Ice Cream Van
The world's first amphibious ice cream van has set sail.
'HMS Flake 99' ventured onto the River Thames in London ahead of a UK tour.
The vessel reaches a top speed of five knots and chimes Rod Stewart's classic 'We Are Sailing' as it ploughs through the water.
She's captained by ice cream mad David Mounfield, a stand-up comedian from Brighton, who was chosen after winning an online competition.
The quirky watercraft was specially commissioned by Fredericks, makers of Cadbury's ice cream to mark National Ice Cream Week (30th May - 5th June).
After a nationwide tour of Britain's beaches, there are plans to take the vehicle across the English Channel and on to the canals of Venice next year.
Early morning bathers and boating enthusiasts got a sneak preview of the van in Blackpool on Monday (30 May) when the customised craft completed a successful, secret maiden voyage.
Organisers say the van was created in response to a growing number of British councils ban ice cream vans from housing estates, parks and outside schools because of concerns about noise pollution. Others have created ice cream selling "exclusion zones" in town centres, hiked the cost of a van operator's licence and limited how long vans can sound their chimes.
Jenny Bostock, Consumer Marketing Manager for Fredericks in Skelmersdale, Lancashire comments: " If you can't make it to your local beach to see our van, you can always pick up a pack of four from your local supermarket. We are now considering taking the remarkable vehicle across the Channel and onto the canals of Venice to champion Britain's beaches and give our continental cousi...
