    The Magpie Robin is one of the most endangered birds on this world. By 1965 less than 20 Magpie Robins survived on the island of Fr?gate. Their number has increased slowly with the help of different bird societies. They are probabely the most expensive birds worldwide. Millions of years of total isolation have led to the development of animals and plants which exist only on the Seychelles. It became undisturbed by human civilization in a warm and tropical environment.

    The bird sanctuary Cousin close to the shores of Praslin is inhabited by over 250.000 seabirds and about four giant turtles. The island is visited by tourists transported on a dinghi. Stormy weather makes a visit impossible sometimes.
    The islands of Cousin and Cousine lie off the west coast of Praslin. In the background are the islands of Mahé and Silhouette. Cousine is privately owned and a small luxury hotel with 4 bungalows has been built. Since 1968 Cousin has been a bird-sanctuary where visitors are welcome three days a week.     The Bird Island Lodge offers 24 beach front bungalows. The visitors can watch millions of seabirds nesting and breeding from close range. Another inhabitant of Bird Island is Esmeralda believed to be the world's oldest and heaviest land tortoise. Bird Island is situated 96 km north of Mahé, a flat coral island. It¹s the home of several million seabirds. The largest colony are the Fairy terns. They stay six months, from May to October, nesting and breeding. Than they disappear and nobody knows where they stay during the next six months.

    Lindsay Chong Seng is the director of the "Seychelles Island Foundation", an organisation responsible for the conservation of Aldabra and the Vallee de Mai, which have been listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. As a scientist, Chong Seng writes about the natural wonders of the Seychelles, the origins of the granite islands and the unusual features of their flora and fauna.
    The island, once inhabited is a bird sanctuary since 1973. It was bought by Christo per Cadbury for the Royal Society for Nature Conversation. 1975 the Seychelles government declared the island a special nature reserve. The small community was moved to other islands. The island was given back to nature.

    The name FLAMINGO comes from the Spanish word flamenco - the fiery music of Andalusia. It aptly describes the breathtaking sight of a soaring, vivid pink cloud as hundreds of flamingos take off from the water. In the LAGUNA RIO LAGARTOS, on the northerly point of the Yucatán peninsula, up to 30,000 flamingos nest at the start of the rainy season, from June to August.
