Woodpecker stores nuts in tree holes, Stanford University, California, America - Jan 2012
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Michael Yang / Rex Features (1543731g)
1 of 2 in sequence. An acorn woodpecker looks at the acorn that it has just placed in a hole in a storage tree. However, the hole is too big or too small.
Are You Nuts! Woodpeckers Make Hole-y Mess Of Tree
These woodpeckers make a hole-y mess of their local trees - storing up to 50,000 acorns in each trunk.
The busy birds spend their time boring holes in granary trees, before carefully slotting the nuts into the spaces - if they can find one the right size!
Photographer Michael Yang snapped the busy birds in action at Stanford University in California.
He explains: "I spotted a family of Acorn Woodpeckers hard at work storing acorns for the winter.
"They carefully pick acorns from oak trees and fly them to nearby storage/granary trees which sometimes hold up to 50,000 acorns.
"The woodpeckers bore holes in the trees with their beaks to store their acorns in. Some of the trees have so many holes that you can see right through the trunk and limbs! In some places, it looks like the tree is about to snap in two.
The acorn woodpeckers live in families of up to 16 birds, sharing the work of boring holes, gathering and storing the acorns, and raising young.
The woodpeckers spend a large part of their time inspecting acorns that they have already stored in their granary trees. The acorns get smaller as they dry out and need to be moved to smaller holes.
Acorn woodpeckers nest in cavities, often in the same tree where they store their acorns. They need to defend their acorns from other birds and woodpeckers.

Ordinary objects come to life as artist claps eyes on the potential comic creatures, Germany - Dec 2011
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Timm Schneider / Rex Features (1518587m)
Timm Schneider the creator of the humourous art that brings ordinary objects to life when a pair of comic eyes is placed on them.
Artist Claps Eyes on Potential Comic Creatures
Pedestrians may be forgiven in thinking they are being watched with Timm Schneider's street art.
The German photographer gives often-surprising personalities to ordinary objects simply by giving them a comedy pair of eyes.
Take a walk down certain streets in Germany and find the pavements turned into a playground of colourful creatures.
Passer-bys have done a double take while passing watchful bins and beady-eyed bollards.
Photo highlights include a dog deciding twice to use its beloved lamp-post after being stared at intently.
The 28-year-old freelance graphic designer said: "Most people are thrilled when they see my artwork on the street, I think because of the simplicity and the humorous nature."
However, Mr Schnieder says that people quite often run off with the Kermit-like eyes.
He also said: "I don't feel like the typical artist selling artworks in galleries.
"I am just having fun and define my own border of what is art measured on the reaction of the public."

Out Of This World: Wedding Rings Made From Gold Sent Into Space
Here's an out of this world romantic gift - rings made from gold that has been into space.
Space Rings claim to be the first jewellery in the world made of gold sent in outer space in a suborbital rocket.
The metal was placed in a nose cone of a UP Aerospace SL-5 rocket and launched from Spaceport America on 20 May.
The nearly 20-foot tall UP Aerospace SL-5 rocket reached the altitude of approximately 70 miles (130 km) above the Earth's surface.
During the rocket's 15-minute flight, it reached speeds of 4,000 miles per hour, taking 90 seconds to lift its payload capsule for 4 minutes into space.
Only 50 sets of $17,000 Space Wedding Rings and only 50 $12,000 Space Rings will be made available worldwide.
SpaceWed CEO Anna Wieruszewska Puto explains: "SpaceWed, being the only company in the world offering space jewellery, aims at providing an experience that is truly out of this world and the products which are the answer to the unique desires of the most demanding customers."
Each ring and wedding ring of the 50th Anniversary Collection is assigned a unique serial number, to be chosen by the client when ordering. This number will be engraved on the ring, along with the SpaceWed logo. The rings are sold in a custom designed Space Capsule and include a Certificate of Space Flight, as well as documentation of the rocket launch on a USB pendrive.

Robin examines itself in a mirror placed on the ground, Fareham, Hampshire, Britain - 03 May 2011
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Mike Walker / Rex Features ( 1321356j )
The Prettiest Birdie Of Them All?
Mirror mirror on the wall who is the prettiest birdie of them all?
This robin appears fascinated by its own reflection as it peers into a shiny surface.
The moment took place after photographer Mike Walker put a mirror down in his garden in Fareham, Hampshire to see how the birds would react.
And rather than be startled by its reflection, or see it as a rival to chase off, this robin was eager to examine itself from all angles.
Returning several times it cocked its head this way and that and opened and closed its wings - as though trying to find its most photogenic side.
At one point the hungry creature even brought its lunch of tasty grubs along so that it could get a closer look.
Speaking about the bird's antics Mike said: "The robin couldn't get enough of itself".

Silk production - from worm to catwalk, southern India - 2010
SILK PRODUCTION - FROM WORM TO CATWALK
For many silk - the Queen of all fabrics - spells luxury, elegance, class and comfort.
But for hundreds of thousands of people in India it is something much more mundane but infinitely important - a vital life line.
An estimated 700,000 people are involved in various sericulture (silk production) activities in India.
Half of all the silk produced in India comes from the region of Karnataka where a sub-tropical climate allows for year-round production.
In 2007-08 India exported more than GBP 400 million of raw silk, carpets and ready made garments.
In 2007 alone it produced 18,320 metric tonnes of raw silk, making it the second a largest silk producer in the world.
It is second only behind China, which produced 108,420 metric tonnes of raw silk in the same period.
While the difference is vast, India's contribution is even more impressive considering that much of its production is done using outdated tools or by hand.
Ultimately, however, poor technology and high production costs undermine the vital role played by sericulture in improving India's rural economy.
The Worm
The Silkworm Seed Production Centre in Mysore is run by Professor N.M. Biram Saheb.
He explains that the Indian government pioneered the provision of disease free lays of eggs as a way of improving yields without increasing start-up costs
The practice means that farmers are provided with a steady stream of healthy silkworm eggs.
It is deep in the seed production centre where the 'work' of creating these eggs takes place - in darkened rooms where moths are laid out on newspaper in racks of plastic trays.
Powerhouses of the silk industry they may be, but in reality they are pale weaklings whose only purpose is to mat...
