LOG CABIN, SHACK, HOME OF NINE PEOPLE, BARAHONA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
The coast of BARAHONA. Despite the tourist boom the republic still ranks among the poor countries on earth. "Mio Rancho" is the name proudly given to this log cabin built from driftwood, without water or electricity, but with a sea view. Once home to a family of nine, the shack is now for sale. The rural population is irresistibly drawn to the towns, in the belief that they will find work and thus a future there. (FOTO: DUKAS/MICHAEL FRIEDEL)

REMOTE FISHING-VILLAGE MANO JUAN, OF THE ISLAND SAONA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
The remote fishing-village of MANO JUAN on the almost uninhabited island of SAONA can best be reached by boat. Day-trippers bring plenty of business to the little restaurant and souvenir stands. Daily surveillance flights by the US Coast Guard patrol the straits between here and Puerto Rico, which is United States territory. Illegal economic refugees try to escape the unemployment and poverty of their Dominican homeland. (FOTO: DUKAS/MICHAEL FRIEDEL)

The extended family of Victor Betances in the fish-ing-village of BAORUCO, in BARAHONA province. In most Caribbean families the children grow up with the women - mothers, grandmothers and aunts. The fathers have either done a bunk or are working away from home. Children have to start early contributing to the family's upkeep. Illiteracy, unemployment and impoverishment are the problems facing the new government. (FOTO: DUKAS/MICHAEL FRIEDEL)

COLMADO, LITTLE GENERAL STORE FOR DAILY NECESSITIES, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
COLMADOS, or little general stores, are scattered throughout the country and supply the population with their daily necessities. They are also an important venue for swapping gossip, and for buying rum and beer. Due to lack of money and refrigerators people buy very little for the larder - just shopping daily for the bare essentials: a soup-cube, a cup of rice, some salt and one cigarette. • SLUM IN THE CAPITAL SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

SLUM IN THE CAPITAL SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
One of over 30 slum districts in the capital, SANTO DOMINGO, where over 2 1/2 million people are crammed into an area of just 162 sq. km (63 sq. miles). The overwhelming majority live miserably in appalling conditions. Torrential rainfall damages the houses made of wood and junk materials. The paint for the colourful housefronts is regularly donated by the political parties before the presidential elections, every four years. (FOTO: DUKAS/MICHAEL FRIEDEL)

SUGAR-MILL NEAR PUERTO PLATA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
In the midst of sugar-cane fields on the main road from PUERTO PLATA to SANTIAGO stands the impressive "Amistad" sugar mill. For 3 months of the year work goes on 24 hours a day in a total of 16 sugar factories around the country. Conditions are so wretched that despite high unemployment Haitians have to be "imported". The pay for a tonne of sugar-cane is only a few pesos, enough to buy a packet of cigarettes. (FOTO: DUKAS/MICHAEL FRIEDEL)
