DOCTOR BURNED HIMSELF - FOR A TEST
Doctor W. J. H. Butterfield of London, aged 30 and a triple blue of Oxford, told American scientists at a conference in Washington how he and a team of seven others burned themselves in experiments to determine the effects of atomic flash burns. Most of their research was that by fleet, Surrey, where the medical research Council sponsored the tests. The team learned of first hand the effects of burns but undergoing months of painful exposure to flashes of heat. The results of the experiments are now published. Some animals were used, but since these are expensive - and since precise information on pain was needed the team decided to use human beings. Information gained is said to be invaluable for the authorities charged with the care of potential atom bomb victims. Dr. Butterfield graduated with the degrees M.A., B.M., B.CH. at Oxford in 1945. Later he studied in London and at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. After two years in the United States, he continued research work at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. He lives in Birmingham.

AMERICA'S NO . 1 G-MAN
J. Edgar Hoover, America's No .1 G-man , who heads the famed Federal bureau of investigation. As a 30 shilling a week clerk in the Congressional library (Washington) he studied law at night school. Since 1924, when he was appointed to the top F.B.I.post, he has encouraged the use of scientific methods in internal security , counter espionage and gang-busting. Gang warfare of the 1920s was largely wiped out owing to his efforts. During the war, he
headed 150,000 police in addition to his own staff of 4,300 G-men in the nation's counter-espionage service operations spread as far as South America, Puerto Rico , Mexico, Alaska and the Philippines during the last war. He was awarded the honorary K.B.E.for his intelligence and security work. Indicative of his brusque realism is his comment on gangsters: I don't know any other name for rats but ' rats'. ' At 55, he is secured from challenge as America's leading law enforcement officer. He is no relation to ex President Hoover.
