Evening gown owned by Maud Messel (née Sambourne) 1900-05
Velvet dress with lace and sleeves and silk lining. This evening dress belonging to Marion & Linley’s daughter Maud who are up at Sambourne House . Maud too an early interest in fashion.
A display of rare, nationally significant outfits is at the heart of Out shopping: The dresses of Marion and Maud Sambourne (1880-1910), a major new exhibition (23 March – 20 October 2024) at Leighton House and Sambourne House which shines a spotlight on the intimate story of a middle-class mother and her affluent daughter at a moment in history that shaped the way fashion is consumed today.
Several of the outfits have never been publicly displayed before and others have not been seen for more than two decades. A number are rare surviving examples by leading – often female – designers of the era. All are being conserved especially for the exhibition.
Marion Sambourne was the wife of Victorian illustrator and Punch cartoonist Linley Sambourne. Their daughter, Maud, shared an artistic flair which she abandoned in pursuit of a prosperous marriage.
The exhibition includes more than 40 exhibits which marked important moments in both Marion and Maud’s lives, offering a detailed picture of their ‘mother and daughter’ relationship and how fashion informed their distinct personalities and the lives of women of the period. Alongside the 10 dresses, there are photographs, letters, drawings and receipts from the Sambourne archive.

Former James Bond girl Maud Adams cuts a youthful and athletic figure as she enjoys an afternoon dog walk right before her 77th birthday. The Swedish-born actress started her career as a model and moved to Paris then New York City, where she worked for Eileen Ford, before pursuing her Hollywood acting ambitions and landing roles on TV hits such as Hawaii Five-O and Kojak. Her breakthrough role came in 1974 when she starred as Christopher LeeÍs villain in Bond classic The Man With The Golden Gun, in which Roger Moore starred, then she returned to the 007 franchise for Octopussy in 1983, also co-starring Moore. Other star turns included The Christian Licorice Store in 1971, Rollerball in 1975, Killer Force in 1976 and Hell Hunters in 1989. These days Maud lives a quiet life in Los Angeles with her second husband, retired judge Charles Rubin, whom she wed in 1999. For her February 10 outing she wore trendy camouflage pants, a blue jacket, black loafers and designer shades.

Christening of Miss Maud Elizabeth Daphne Marina Windsor, St James's Palace, London, Britain - 16 Dec 2013
Frederick Windsor, the only child of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, is seen posing proudly with wife Sophie at a reception following the official christening of their daughter Maud Elizabeth Daphne Marina Windsor. Proving that the royal family love a spot of recycling, for the occasion little Maud, who was born in August, wore the exact same replica Victorian christening robe worn by Prince George - son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - at his christening in October. The robe was commissioned by the Queen in 2008 to replace the original robe, which was made in 1841 for the eldest child of Queen Victoria and subsequently worn by many members of the royal family. Maud is a first cousin twice removed from the Queen and is 40th in the line to the throne, compared to her cousin Prince George who is 3rd in line.
