The possibility of eye transplants to et blind people see again has moved a step closer with a new invention.
Eyes require a constant supply of oxygenated blood, which is difficult to supply after an eye has been removed from a donor's body.
If that flow of oxygen ceases for even a short time, the eye's retina will permanently cease to function.
But now scientists have developed an eye-transplant device known as the eye-ECMO.
An ECMO stands for "extracorporeal membrane oxygenation,” a system used to oxygenate patients' blood during heart and lung transplants.
The new device for eyes is being developed by US scientists from the University of Miami, along with US institutions the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the Miller School of Medicine.
The idea is that when an eye is removed from a brain-dead donor's body before their clinical death occurs it gets placed in the eye-ECMO.
This continuously pumps warmed, oxygenated blood mixed with a "unique solution" in and out of the eye.
As long as that liquid circulates, the eye remains alive and functional.
The setup is portable and self-contained enabling the donor eye to be moved from one operating room to another, or even between different hospitals.

Manhattan DA Bragg: New Discovery Law Removes Judges’ Handcuffs
May 7, 2025, New York, New York, USA: Manhattan District Attorney ALVIN BRAGG, 51, speaks in front a podium sign saying 'STANDING STRONG, FIGHTING CRIME' and said 'Come to Manhattan Criminal Court any day of the week and you’ll see prosecutors from my office arguing their cases, fighting for accountability for crimes that occur in this borough. You will also see them pushing giant metal carts, filled to the brim with stacks of thousands of papers and files. This is discovery — materials relevant to the case, like witness statements and DNA test results. It also includes a great deal of much less relevant material, like battery logs for police officers’ body-worn cameras and administrative records showing where in the courthouse a defendant was held. By law, prosecutors must disclose these materials to the defense at the very earliest stage of a case. Ever since I became a prosecutor in 2003, I have been committed to robust and early discovery. But soon after I was elected Manhattan’s district attorney, it became abundantly clear to me that New York state’s 2019 discovery law — the recently revised statute dictating what materials are to be disclosed to the defense and when — had dire unintended consequences. Case outcomes were being determined not by the evidence in a case, but by a prosecutor’s ability to produce reams of records having nothing to do with guilt or innocence. The law was undermining accountability in the courtroom — and critically, undermining our city’s public safety, too. That contrasts directly with my mission, which is to keep everyone safe. I’m honored to oversee an office of 1,600 employees and more than 600 prosecutors. From homicides to assaults and rapes, crime victims are counting on us to bring them justice and peace of mind. The people of Manhattan expect us to keep them safe and hold those who commit crimes accountable. But accountability under the 2019 discovery law proved hard to come by. After the law went into

Tunis Crowds Welcome Back Resilience Convoy
A pro-Palestinian man stands with a placard depicting the image of an injured Palestinian teenager that reads ''immediate ceasefire'' as thousands of pro-Palestinian Tunisians, activists, and supporters gather in Tunis, Tunisia, on June 19, 2025, to welcome and honor the Resilience Convoy following its return from Libya. While en route to Egypt, the Resilience Convoy is stopped by authorities in eastern Libya at the Syrte checkpoint. According to the organizers, more than a dozen participants are threatened, assaulted, and then detained before being conditionally released by security forces loyal to Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar. Forced to turn back, the convoy ultimately has to return to Tunisia. The Resilience Convoy, also known as the Maghreb Caravan of Resilience or the Soumoud Convoy, is a civilian and solidarity initiative launched from Tunisia. It brings together over 1,500 participants and pro-Palestinian activists from across the Maghreb (North Africa) in support of the people of Gaza. The convoy aims to symbolically break the Israeli siege of Gaza by delivering a message of solidarity overland to the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip. It is initially planned to join the international movement Global March to Gaza at the Rafah crossing on June 15. (Photo by Chedly Ben Ibrahim/NurPhoto) -

Tunis Crowds Welcome Back Resilience Convoy
A pro-Palestinian, his face covered with the traditional Palestinian Keffiyeh, stands with a large Palestinian flag as thousands of pro-Palestinian Tunisians, activists, and supporters gather in Tunis, Tunisia, on June 19, 2025, to welcome and honor the Resilience Convoy following its return from Libya.

Pro-Palestinian March In Support Of Global March To Gaza In Tunis
A young pro-Palestinian woman holds up a sign reading in Arabic 'breaking the siege is a duty' during a march organized by civil society, feminist, and human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and the Tunisian League of Human Rights (LTDH), in Tunis, Tunisia, on June 15, 2025. The march brings together dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators in support of the international movements, the Global March to Gaza and the Maghreb Resilience Convoy. These humanitarian movements aim to head towards the Rafah border crossing in Egypt to lift the blockade of Gaza amid Israel's ongoing war in the enclave. Demonstrators also call for the criminalization of all normalization of relations with Israel while expressing support for the Palestinian resistance. The Global March to Gaza is a civilian-led international initiative, scheduled to begin on June 15, 2025, aiming to march from Arish, Egypt, to the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip in Palestine. Two days earlier, hundreds of participants in the Global March to Gaza arriving in Cairo have their passports taken at a checkpoint and are detained and deported to their home countries in Europe and North Africa.
