Thomas Heatherwick: 'My revolutionary new electric car isn't just zero-carbon - it actually cleans the air'
The man behind London's new Routemaster buses has designed an electric vehicle featuring Star Trek-style doors, passengers sitting around a table and air-cleaning technology. Stephen Armstrong meets him.
"Usually transport designers think about moving people around, but people themselves think about the music they listen to or the interesting things they see, so people should be the kings and queens of travelling, moving in mobile sculptures instead of a series of homogenous boxes," Thomas Heatherwick explains. "That's why when I was designing a new electric car, the first place I went was Havana to see a city full of old, beautiful and distinctive vehicles."

A new autonomous electric car is set to hit the roads – which cleans up the pollution from petrol and diesel powered traffic. The AIRO also has a customisable interior can be configured into multiple functional spaces that turn the car into a moving room or a space for life. The seats rotate from a traditional forward-facing driving position to face each other for social activities such as dining on the four-leaf table which neatly folds away to transform the space into a lounge. A foldaway screen turns the interior into a perfect gaming-pod .The contoured seats also fully recline to form a spacious double bed. Using the latest technology in glass, the fully glazed roof becomes opaque on command for total privacy. The AIRO has been unveiled as a concept by Chinese electric car company IM Motors but it is expected to go into production as early as 2023.It was designed for IM by British design company Heatherwick Studio.
