KAZAKHSTAN / Kurchatov / 2008.Abandoned Soviet military base after the collapse of the USSR. The town was founded in 1947 and two years later the first nuclear tests took place at the nearby Semipalatinsk site. Around 700 bombs were tested duringthe 40 year period up to 1989. At least 100 of thesetests were carried out above ground. In some areasthe contamination is severe and whilst the formertesting site is officially closed people can enter with little difficulty.

These haunting photographs show the remnants of the once all-powerful Soviet empire.

They are the work of Eric Lusito, who spent six years travelling throughout the former Soviet world from East Germany to Mongolia, from Poland to Kazakhstan to seek out remains of the military installations that embodied the ambition and the might of the USSR.

Describing himself as working like an archaeologist, the French photographer says his project "Traces of the Soviet Empire" is a photographic record of the land and architecture - haunted by the symbols and history of a once powerful Empire.

The on-going project takes the form of three series: exteriors, interiors, and found photographs "images from another time, another space and another world".

What he found was colourful propaganda wall art, faded frescos of Lenin, discarded gas masks, and huge monuments, including those in the shapes of a soldier and a sword.

Rodkin's The Kiss in your kitchen or Michelangelo's David in the dining room, it's now possible to download 3D printable designs of museum masterpieces.

Eventually the entire world's cultural heritage of sculptural masterworks will be made available to the public by scanning and publishing their 3D printable files into the digital commons.

In a pioneering 3D printing project entitled, "Through A Scanner, Skulpturhalle", Cosmo Wenman will 3D scan images taken of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, including the Venus de Milo and Medusa Rondanini, and make the 3D digital files accessible to all.

Wenman has been granted copyright permission by The Skulpturhalle Basel museum in Switzerland to take photographs of their 2,000 high-quality plaster casts of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures.

He said: "There are millennia of beautiful physical forms that can be digitized, propagated, and remixed over and over again in perpetuity, starting now.

"They can become the foundation of an unlimited combinatorial explosion of adaptation and creation, and for untold new artwork and art forms in the coming years."

Although the project is still in the fundraising stage through a Kickstarter campaign, which launched on June 6, Wenman, who is based in California, has already begun processing previously unpublished scans he has taken at other museums.

This includes the British Museum's famous colossal bust of Ramesses II which will be released onto Marketbot's Thinkingiverse 3D printing website at no cost and copyright free.

As well as creating a life-size 3D printed adaptation of the British Museum's Head of a horse of Selene from the Parthenon Elgin Marbles collection using pl...

Pensioner Gets In Festive Mood With Dazzling Decorations
A woman has decked out the ceiling of her living room with a whopping 1,700 Christmas baubles.

68-year-old Sylvia Pope starting decorating her home in Swansea, Wales at the end of September and doesn't expect to finish until Christmas Day.

She already has a bauble collection that numbers 1,700 - which has been brought from all around the world - and each year she spends a further GBP 100 buying new decorations.

With it getting harder for her to climb up to individually pin the baubles, Sylvia is now considering leaving them in place all year round.

According to Sylvia her best bauble buying experience was when she visited Macy's in New York and was overwhelmed with the choice on offer.

On that trip she walked away with 30 new decorations and even had to buy a new bag to carry them all home in.

Some of her most expensive baubles cost GBP 14 each and were brought from Harrods in London.
