Will he get there? An apprentice tries to manoeuvre his way across the road and almost comes a 'cropper' at the hands of a "free man" of the Order. If the beer is spilt he must go back for more.

Before the ceremonies, revived this year for the first time since the war, the Marblers attend a special service of dedication at St Edward the Martyr's Church in Corfe. The church was built in 1390, when the Ancient Order of Purbeck Marblers had already been going strong for a few hundred years.

Outside the Fox Inn, the vicar of St Edward the Martyr's Church has a word with Nelson Burt. As the last quarryman to marry, Nelson has the right and duty of putting the football into play. The Marblers will kick it a short distance to symbolise the yearly marking of the boundaries of their ancient quarrying rights.

With a bottle in each pocket, and a leg up to the window by his pals, he was the first apprentice to cross to the meeting house successfully.

Successful apprentice, Fred Williams, holds another quart of beer aloft outside the Fox Inn in celebration. The last rite of the Ancient Order of Purbeck Marblers ceremonial induction of new 'free men' requires the candidate to cross the street to the Order's meeting house, in the face of stiff opposition, without spilling a quart pot of beer. Now Fred is a member of a very exclusive trade union, which is so old that it cannot trace its origin.
