Lampedusa, gateway to Europe for Africa's migrants
October 22, 2019 - Lampedusa, Italia: A Tunisian migrant who recently arrived in Lampedusa shows the 'Boating HD' app he used to navigate between Zarzis and Lampedusa. Since the early 2000s, Lampedusa, the European territory closest to Libya, has become a prime transit point for irregular migrants from Africa, the Middle East and Asia wanting to enter Europe. In 2004 the Libyan and Italian governments reached a secret agreement that obliged Libya to accept African immigrants deported from Italian territories. This resulted in the mass repatriation of many people from Lampedusa to Libya between 2004 and 2005. From January to April 2015, about 1600 migrants died on the route from Libya to Lampedusa, making it the deadliest migrant route in the world. (Mehdi Chebil/Polaris) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS)

STORY COPY: What’s the best picture of Earth ever?
That’s the question NASA’s Earth Observatory is asking in a visually arresting contest they have called Tournament Earth 2020.
Since 1999, Earth Observatory has published over 16,000 images, so to celebrate their 20th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, they want the public to pick their all-time best image.
Readers will narrow the field from 32 nominees down to one champion in a five-round knockout-style tournament. Pictures have been chosen under the categories: Past Winners, Home Planet, Land & Ice, and Sea & Sky. These will go head-to-head each week from March 23 to April 28, 2020, when a tournament winner will be announced.
NASA Earth Observatory is an online publishing outlet for NASA which was created in 1999. It is the principal source of satellite imagery and other scientific information pertaining to the climate and the environment which are being provided by NASA for consumption by the general public.
By removing natural and stray light sources, researchers get a clearer picture of the human footprint on Earth.

KAZAKHSTAN / Kurchatov/ 2008. Abandoned Soviet militarybase after the collapse of the USSR. Situated in north east Kazakhstan. In 1989 it was given its current name of Kurchatov, after the Soviet nuclear scientist Igor Kurchatov. It was the perations centre for the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site and when it was fully operational it was one of the mostsecret and restricted places in the Soviet Union.Consequently it did not appear on maps and itsname was frequently changed.
Eric Lusito - Traces of the Soviet Empire
FULL COPY: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/p8ug
These haunting photographs show the remnants of the once all-powerful Soviet empire.
They are the work of Eric Lusito, who spent six years travelling throughout the former Soviet world from East Germany to Mongolia, from Poland to Kazakhstan to seek out remains of the military installations that embodied the ambition and the might of the USSR.
Describing himself as working like an archaeologist, the French photographer says his project "Traces of the Soviet Empire" is a photographic record of the land and architecture - haunted by the symbols and history of a once powerful Empire.
The on-going project takes the form of three series: exteriors, interiors, and found photographs "images from another time, another space and another world".
What he found was colourful propaganda wall art, faded frescos of Lenin, discarded gas masks, and huge monuments, including those in the shapes of a soldier and a sword.

Paper Victorian dresses by Susan Stockwell, London, Britain - Dec 2011
Manadatory Credit: Photo by Colin Hampden / Rex Features (1511458c)
Life-sized Victorian 'Colonial Dress' made by Susan Stockwell from maps exhibited in York City Art Gallery
Paper Dresses - Made from Maps and Money
An artist has created life-size Victorian dresses made entirely from paper.
The series of dresses have been created by acclaimed artist Susan Stockwell who stitches together world maps or international money to makes the gowns.
Highlights of the collection include the Colonial Dress detailing maps of the former colonies which Britain ruled over during its days of empire.
The Highland Dress is composed of ordinance survey maps of the Scottish highlands and the Money Dress is made from old international bank notes.
Susan's dresses have obvious visual representations, for example the Highland Dress shows the English colonisation and occupation of Scotland over 300 years through maps of the Scottish highlands.
However, they also represent feminism battles by using military maps to send a double message of war and politics being dominated by men in Western history.
The London-based artist said: "My dresses are metaphors for ideas, the Colonial Dress is in the style of a Victorian bustle dress and they were worn at a time when British Colonialism was at its height; the bigger the bustle and richer the material the more you were displaying your wealth so by using the maps as the material they were displaying the wealth of the Empire."
Each dress takes Susan several months to make and so far only one of the dresses has been sold.
The Highland Dress is currently part of a private collection in Saudi Arabia and the Colonial and Money Dress are exhibited in York City Art Gallery.
Susan gained an MA from the Royal College of Art in London in 1992. From thereon she has exhibited in galleries and museums all over the world including the V&A in London; Th...
