A game strip worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan has sold for more than $2.6 million USD / €2.3 million euros.
The record breaking sports icon wore the red Chicago Bulls jersey and shorts during the 1992-93 US NBA season.
Unlike sports stars today who get a fresh hit for every game, Jordan’s was washed for reuse at the end of a match.
Two independent authenticators combined to photo-match the items as having been worn by Jordan in 17 games during the 1992-93 season, as well as on the October 18, 1993 cover of Sports Illustrated.
Jordan, now 62, played 15 seasons in the NBA between 1984 and 2003, winning six championships with the Bulls.
He was also voted Most Valuable Finals Player six times and regular season MVP nine times.
He is now a businessman and part owner of lower league basketball team the Charlotte Hornets.
The jersey and shorts with his 23 number which was retired when he left the Bulls.
The shirt was sold by US based Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas for $2,623,000 USD / €2,320.300 euros.

US sale room Heritage Auctions said it offered a rare opportunity to appreciate the illustration like never before -- including a rarely seen glimpse at Milgrom's impressive and stunning detail work.

It is believed to be one of the top five highest prices ever paid for the sought after fashion accessory which is made from Nile crocodile skin.
The 25cm matte white Himalaya Birkin featured 18k white gold hardware set with 4.05 carats of brilliant diamonds.
It was sold by US based saleroom Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas.
A spokesperson said: “Crafted from Niloticus Crocodile, a rare and exquisite material, the hand-dyed bag draws inspiration from the snow-dusted peaks of the Himalayas, with a colouring process so detailed that it ensures each Himalaya Birkin is truly one of a kind.”
Heritage luxury accessories director Diane D’Amato said: “The Hermès Diamond Himalaya Birkin is nothing short of exquisite.
“It’s a work of art and the pinnacle of rarity, artistry and luxury.”
The bag measures 25cm high, 20 cm wide and just under 13 cm deep with 18k white gold hardware featuring 4.05 carats of round brilliant pavé-set diamonds in the plaques, touret, pontets, lock, and keys.
The interior is done in grey leather, featuring one slip pocket and one zip pocket.

One of four surviving pairs worn by Judy Garland in 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, the slippers were sold on December 7 by US saleroom Heritage Auctions.
A spokesperson said: “They are by far, the most valuable movie memorabilia ever sold at auction.”
