A special effects Star Wars fighter ship used for the scenes showing Darth Vader’s Death Star under attack in the first movie, has sold for $1.55 million USD / €1.43 million euros at auction.
It is now the third-most valuable Star Wars screen-used prop sold at auction.
The fighter is known as a Y-wing and part of the rebel alliance fleet. It was known as TIE Killer.
It’s most famous for leading the first trench run on the Death Star before Darth Vader destroyed it in 1977’s A New Hope.
But the 70cm miniature endured to star in the July 25 and 26 sale at Heritage Auctions in Dallas Texas and online.
The live bidding opened at $300,000 USD before an intense bidding war saw it close at $1.55 million USD.
It is behind only an X-wing fighter model Heritage sold for $3.1 million USD / €2.87 million euros in October last year and an R2-D2 robot costume that sold for $2.76 million USD / €2.55 million euros in 2017.
It was the work of model maker Colin Cantwell who worked for movie special effects company Industrial Light and Magic.

A space craft prop from the first Star Wars movie has sold for a record breaking $3.13 million USD / €2.97 million euros at auction.
The 1:24 scale model is said to be a world record price for a screen-used Star Wars film prop.
The extremely desirable lot was a long-lost model of an X-wing fighter used in
1977’s Star Wars movie A New Hope.
It featured in the filming of the climactic battle sequence in which the Rebel Alliance attack’s Darth Vader’s Death Star.
It was one of four “hero” models built for filming close-ups during the space battle.
It featured as the lead attack craft flown by Red Leader.
The 20-inch / 50 cm model had been considered lost for decades.
However, it was discovered in a cardboard box in the garage of the Oscar-nominated model maker Greg Jein, who died last year at the age of 76.
It was found by a team of visual effects experts, including Gene Kozicki while helping Jein’s family sift through his collection.
The bidding for the miniature model began at $400,000 USD / €379.525 euros before the hammer came down at $3.13 million USD.

A ceremonial dress worn by actress Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia in the first ever Star Wars movie is coming up for sale at auction — and is expected to fetch up to $2 million USD.
Fisher is seen in the low-cut white gown as she presents medals to Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford and Luke Skywalker, played by Mark Hamill in the closing scene of 1977’s A New Hope.
The dress is thought to be the only surviving Carrie Fisher costume from the original Star Wars film.
It is being sold as the highlight of a movie and television memorabilia sale in Los Angeles being over three days from June 28th with over 1,400 original items valued at around $12 million USD.
The sale is being organised by UK company Propstore and the Leia dress was in the collection of Propstore founder Stephen Lane.
