People with sensitive teeth could soon have them cured — with microscopic robots.
The tiny magnetic devices penetrate deep into the tiny tunnels in teeth that lead to nerve endings known as dentinal tubules.
The robots then form durable seals for worn enamel, offering lasting relief from sensitivity in just one application.
Dental hypersensitivity affects nearly one in four people worldwide.
It occurs when the tubules in the dentine, the layer beneath the enamel. become exposed due to erosion or gum recession.
These tiny tubules lead directly to nerve endings, which is why even a sip of cold water can cause a sudden, stabbing pain.
Currently people with sensitive teeth can only get temporary relief using specialist desensitising toothpastes, toothpastes daily.
The new solution has come from researchers at the Indian Institute of Science in collaboration with a tech startup called Theranautilus.
They have created the robots which are called CalBots which are about the size of a virus at four hundred billionths of a metre.
The devices are loaded with a proprietary calcium silicate-based ceramic formula.
They are guided by an external magnetic field deep into the exposed tubules.
Once there, the bots self-assemble into stable, cement-like plugs that block the tubules and recreate a durable seal that mimics the natural environment of the tooth.

A face mask that uses silver and gold filters to instantly kill bacteria, has been developed by a news camerman.The Breeze was inspired by the journalists and camera crews put themselves in reporting from the front line.In this case it was bringing updates on the coronavirus pandemic.He brought together experts for his company Artech, based in Rockville, Maryland, USA, and began working on the Breeze mask.The revolutionary design is crafted from an outer fabric that’s naturally cooling, allowing wearers to breathe easy without the warm breath making the lower half of the face uncomfortable.More importantly, an inner layer is made from silver and 24-karat gold. Coupled together with an N95 filter to trap particulate matter, unique lining is inherently anti-microbial and instantly destroys any germs that come in contact with it. A photographer has captured a series of striking images of Cuba's Wi-Fi 'Revolution'.
Photographer Valerio Berdini captured a series of images that show Cuban faces illuminated by mobile phone light, as many browse the internet on their mobile phone devices for the first time.
In June 2015 Cuban citizens gained access to Wi-Fi for the first time when Cuban government-owned telecommunication company, ETECSA, began installing 35 Wi-Fi hotspots in the parks of the main cities.
Until that date the web in Cuba was an affair limited to the guests of few luxury hotels and some official state offices.
