Lew sourced mountain rye grains from the Cowra Agricultural Research and Advisory Station, first established as an "experimental farm" in 1903. The 390-hectare farm, now managed by the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries, helped pioneer the production of federation wheat, a rust and drought-resistant grain and Australia's oldest variety of wheat.
