    According to the UN, Spain takes third place in the World when it comes to demand for prostitutes, after Thailand and Puerto Rico. The State Department’s report on trafficking said that 300.00-400,000 women worked in prostitution in Spain. The report said that 90 percent were trafficked. A total of 5,695 people were released from slavery by Spain’s security forces between 2012 and 2016, according to the Interior Ministry.

ROCI?O MORA (in the center) , former director of the NGO Apramp. The NGO sends teams of women who have survived trafficking ordeals onto the streets to seek out victims to help. In 2016, they rescued 1,259 women who were then placed in rehabilitation programs. APRAM is one of the main NGOs involved in the rescue and rehabilitation of victims. JOSE? NIETO, is the chief inspector of the Center of Intelligence and Risk Analysis (CIAR) with Spain’s National Police. He has investigated sexual exploitation of women and organized crime related to prostitution for more than 19 years. Lately, he has noticed something has changed.

Originally from Oaxaca, she came to Mexico City to work at a very young age. She is now well known and respected in the neighborhoods that surround Casa Xochiquetzal. At 72, she suffers from Down¿s syndrome and a number of other illnesses. Of all the women at Casa Xochiquetzal, Canela is the only one who did not have children.     MEXICO CITY - 2008-2012: Amalia, a resident of Casa Xochiquetzal, puts on makeup before going out to work on the streets of the La Merced neighborhood of Mexico City on October 15, 2010. Amalia, 66, is from Michoacán and came to Casa Xochiquetzal when it first opened its doors. She wears a wig and pads her bra. She is very animated; words and songs come easily to her. She has also suffered from schizophrenia for 22 years, but despite hearing voices, she works hard not to lose touch with reality. As a way of earning a little money, she gathers plastic bottles to recycle and also helps to sell clothes in a stand operated by her boyfriend of 31 years.
