KAZAKHSTAN / Priozersk / 2008. Abandoned Soviet military base after the collapse of the USSR. Built in 1956 as a ground station to track Sputnik, the first manned satellite, it became one of the most sophisticated Soviet bases for space observation, providing satellite control and space surveillance facilities. From left to right are station 'Kube-Kontur',other destroyed radars, and station MA-9MKTM-1'Romashka'. Once a bustling town of 70,000, Priozersk's population has shrunk to some 12,000.
Eric Lusito - Traces of the Soviet Empire
FULL COPY: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/p8ug
These haunting photographs show the remnants of the once all-powerful Soviet empire.
They are the work of Eric Lusito, who spent six years travelling throughout the former Soviet world from East Germany to Mongolia, from Poland to Kazakhstan to seek out remains of the military installations that embodied the ambition and the might of the USSR.
Describing himself as working like an archaeologist, the French photographer says his project "Traces of the Soviet Empire" is a photographic record of the land and architecture - haunted by the symbols and history of a once powerful Empire.
The on-going project takes the form of three series: exteriors, interiors, and found photographs "images from another time, another space and another world".
What he found was colourful propaganda wall art, faded frescos of Lenin, discarded gas masks, and huge monuments, including those in the shapes of a soldier and a sword.

A Wardrobe Full Of Grace
An icon of the 20th century, Grace Kelly is widely considered to be one of the world's most famous style icons.
Epitomising the glamour of Hollywood and the allure of European royalty, her elegant style has been much admired and copied.
As such there have been numerous exhibitions paying homage to the actress and princess that have toured the world
However, when not on tour the clothes from both her Hollywood and Monaco days can be found in a fluorescent-lit basement room in the Royal Palace in Monte-Carlo.
Here rack upon rack of colourful of clothes - from haute couture to homemade designs - are kept in a special dehumidified and temperature chilled room.
Shoes, hats, gloves and bags are wrapped in tissue and everything is carefully labelled with its designer, the year of origin and the major occasions upon which it was worn.
Items in the collection include a grey chiffon dress worn by Kelly in the 1956 film 'High Society', a Morabito needle point bag taken to the Oscars in 1955 and a tulle evening dress worn to the 1972 Cannes Film Festival.
The collection is carefully preserved by Maryel Girardin, Kelly's former palace wardrobe mistress.
Maryel worked with Kelly for 25 years - acting as her embroiderer, linen supervisor and seamstress.
Following Kelly's death in 1982 it was Maryel who, on the orders of Kelly's husband Prince Rainier, carefully packed away all of the princesses' clothes.
As well as presiding over the Palace collection, Maryel now helps other curators assemble and display exhibitions dedicated to Kelly's style.

Man spends 62 years making fleet of 430 Royal Navy warships out of matchsticks, Blandford, Dorset, Britain - 24 Aug 2010
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Bournemouth News / Rex Features ( 1221547e )
The Matchstick Armada
A man has spent the past 62 years faithfully recreating an armada of 432 Royal Navy warships out of matchsticks and wooden match boxes.
Over the last six decades Philip Warren has painstakingly crafted every naval warship afloat, in service or to have come in since the Second World War.
The ever growing collection, which currently stands at 432, has been drawing huge crowds at exhibitions across the country since 1953.
79-year-old Philip, a retired company director from Blandford, Dorset, began creating his first ship in 1948 when he was just 17 years old.
He uses a razor blade, tweezers and sandpaper to carve the matches and boxes before piecing them together using PVA and balsa wood glue.
In total he has utilized more than 650,000 to create his incredibly detailed 1:300. scale models.
Each is based on plans, drawings and photographs of the real ships and are accurate scale models.
Going one step further, Philip has even crafted 1,200 model aircraft to make his carrier ships even more realistic.
Included amongst his matchstick fleet are the HMS Ark Royal, HMS Belfast and HMS Sheffield.
Vessels from the US Navy include the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz.
One average each ship takes around 1,500 matches and up to three months to build.
However, the larger creations can be made of 5,000 matches and 200 boxes and take up to a year to put together.
Philip's most recent model is the Royal Navy's newest destroyer - HMS Daring - which was formally commissioned in July.
He said: "I started building ships when I was 17, like every other boy back then, and I used what was around me.
"Matches were much more common then - they were used all day, every day, and every man would carry a matchbox with him.
"I looked back to ships from 1945 onwards, from the end of t...
