Pic shows: Dylann Roof, 21, who murdered nine people at the Emanuel African American church in South Carolina on Wednesday night in a race-hate crime, seen here in pictures he posted of himself on an online blog entitled: " The Last Rhodesian," which he appears to have registered online on February 9. The webpage also contains a race hate manifesto of more than 2,000 words which gives an insight into the motive for the shootings. He states: " I chose Charleston because it is most historic city in my state, and at one time had the highest ratio of blacks to Whites in the country. The event that truly awakened me was the Trayvon Martin case. It was obvious that Zimmerman was the the right. But more importantly this prompted me to type in the words 'black on White crime' into Google, and I have never been the same since that day." He posted a large number of photos on the site, including this one, which, according to the metadata embedded within them, were created from August 2014 up until the day of the shooting, June 17 2015. A number of pictures see him posing with a handgun and the Confederate flag, burning an American flag and visiting sites steeped in racial history. His manifesto calls for a new civil war in America. Dylann Roof entered the Emanuel AME church at 110 Calhoun Street where he shot church members at a weekly bible study group. A five-year-old girl survived by playing dead and the killer let one woman escape to tell the world what happened. Eight of the victims died at the scene and one died later in hospital.

Top five NASA Landsat Satellites Images of Earth
During a span of 40 years, since 1972, the Landsat series of Earth observation satellites has become a vital reference worldwide for understanding scientific issues related to land use and natural resources.

Beyond the scientific information they supply, some Landsat images are simply striking to look at, presenting spectacular views of mountains, valleys, and islands as well as forests, grasslands, and agricultural patterns.

By selecting certain features and colouring them from a digital palate, the U.S. Geological Survey has created a series of "Earth as Art" perspectives that demonstrate an artistic resonance in satellite land imagery and provide a special avenue of insight about the geography of each scene.

NASA asked the public to vote on their favourite images from the more than 120 images in the online "Earth as Art" collection. From over 14,000 votes the top five winners were:

1st Place: Van Gogh from Space Landsat 7 Acquired 7/13/2005. In the style of Van Gogh's painting "Starry Night," massive congregations of greenish phytoplankton swirl in the dark water around Gotland, a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea. Population explosions, or blooms, of phytoplankton, like the one shown here, occur when deep currents bring nutrients up to sunlit surface waters, fuelling the growth and reproduction of these tiny plants.

2nd Place: Yukon Delta Landsat 7 Acquired 9/22/2002. Countless lakes, sloughs, and ponds are scattered throughout this scene of the Yukon Delta in southwest Alaska. One of the largest river deltas in the world, and protected as part of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge, the river's sinuous waterways seem like blood vessels branching out to enclose an organ.

    3rd Place: Meandering Mississippi Landsat 7 Acquired 5/28/2003. ...

Perching Pooch: Dog Hilariously Balances On Random Objects
This collection of unusual photographs presents a dog with one mildly remarkable skill; she can stand on pretty much anything.

Atlanta-based photographer Theron Humphrey, 28, is embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to visit all 50 states in the next year and has taken his well-poised dog, Maddie, along for the ride.

Documenting his trip through photoblog: 'Maddie On Things' it shows the two-year-old Redtick Coonhound standing on a horse, a bike and even up a ladder.

The blog, which is updated daily, has gone viral and made Maddie an internet sensation.

Theron said: "Maddie On Things is a light-hearted pause to daily life and simply for people to smile at. It is also a way for me to do something different with my photography as we travel around America.

"Maddie is always by my side when I photograph other people so I decided to make her the subject of my photography and pointed my camera at her for a change.

"Overtime it evolved into putting her on funny things because of her nature to stand really still."

Some people might perceive this project as cruel but Theron assures them that she is not in any danger and is always supervised.

"I have trained Maddie not to move until I come and pick her off whatever she happens to be standing on," explains Theron.

The duo have 20 states left to visit on their trip so Theron will be updating the blog for another 150 days.

You can follow Maddie's posing adventures on her Tumblr, Maddie The Coonhound, where prints of her past exploits are available for purchase.

Theron adopted Maddie in April 2011 from the Cobb County a...

Super Cute Ground Squirrels Emerge For Very First Time
These cute baby round tailed ground squirrels couldn't contain their excitement after being let out of the safety of their burrow for the first time.

The tiny siblings didn't waste any time exploring the big wide world around them.

And it wasn't long before they were up to mischief - play fighting as soon as mum was out of sight.

Photographer Eirini Pajak took these adorable shots close to her home in Florence, Arizona.

The 35-year-old said: "The youngsters spend most of the day nibbling little bits of grass, but they also would pick on each other and play-fight.

"They were not exactly graceful as they were just learning to stand so they would often fall over in clumsiness.

"I had been watching this particular hole on a regular basis so I know that when I found these guys it was their first time above ground.

She added: "I shot everything from my car. I spent a lot of time parked near their hole so that they would get used to me.

"I picked them because they were near a little dirt road, so the mother was somewhat used to occasional cars".

She added: "I shot everything from my car. I spent a lot of time parked near their hole so that they would get used to me.

"I picked them because they were near a little dirt road, so the mother was somewhat used to occasional cars".

Ida, one of the Central Park Zoo's two polar bears, was euthanized Friday June 03, 2011 after veterinarians determined she had cancer-related liver disease. She was 25 years old and leaves behind her male companion, Gus."Ida was a great ambassador for all polar bears," said Jeff Sailer, director of the city zoos."She was truly a wonderful animal and will be missed every day by our staff and guests."Millions have visited Ida through the years and have been inspired to care more about the plight of polar bears in the wild."Ida was born in the Buffalo Zoo in 1985 and came to Central Park two years later. Her keepers were allowed to share some quiet time with her before she was euthanized

Freshwater rainbow trout leaping out of the water, Adirondacks, New York, America - 02 Jan 2011
This colourful freshwater rainbow trout leaps out of the water in an extraordinary bid for freedom. The unusual behaviour has very rarely been captured on camera and shows the trout swimming away from predators so quickly that they breach the water's surface. Photographer Brian Pelkey spends days at a time on a lake patiently waiting for the perfect moment to snap the fish flying through the air. The 60-year-old said: "I had the idea to photograph this phenomenon one evening when I was fishing with my friend and fish started flying out of the water. "I half expected one to jump into our canoe. Since then it has been my mission to capture the essence and beauty of that evening in photographs for all to see".
