Indian surrogate gives birth to American child
April 6, 2013 - Sunnyvale, California, United States: Jennifer Benito-Kowalski (left) and Steve Kowalski open gifts as niece Kiara Walker, 5, looks on during their baby shower at the Fairbrae Swim and Racquet Club. After years of trying to conceive, the Kowalskis paid a surrogate in India to carry their child. Akanksha Infertility Clinic's director, Dr. Nayna Patel, has connected hundreds of clients worldwide with Indian women willing to be surrogate mothers. Her clinic delivers babies at a fraction of the cost and with far less red tape than is possible in the U.S. Today, commercial surrogacy in India has moved far beyond myth. All but unregulated by the national government, it's become a booming industry that attracts thousands of foreign clients and generates millions of dollars annually. Scant official data makes it difficult to know exactly how big a role it plays in the country's flourishing medical tourism sector, which was estimated to be worth $2 billion last year.
