Like many Nilotic groups, they follow a strong animistic belief system, seeing a sacred connection between the natural world and the spiritual realm, particularly with their cattle, land, and surroundings. The Dessenech live in a way that avoids calculations—free from counting ages, numbers, animals, deaths, or even the cycles of rain and drought. They embrace a life focused on the present moment, feeling unburdened and alive. Traditionally, they practice pastoralism, herding cattle, goats, and sheep. They also engage in handicraft, agriculture, growing crops such as millet and sorghum, although their environment can make farming challenging. Fishing is another significant activity due to their proximity to the Omo River and Lake Turkana. As it is one of the poorest tribes, some of the young generations are used to get supported by Australians, Europeans or US citizens in a way that they still live and grow up in their homelands but they have the financial support to study in the nearest cities. The flats were provided by Clearsprings, the Home Office contractor that provides accommodation for asylum seekers in some parts of the UK. When charity workers asked the firm’s accommodation manager if the flat put aside for one asylum seeker was kept to a decent standard, the manager replied “lol”. A screenshot of the exchange of the messages has been shared with Clearsprings but it declined to comment.
